Get up close and personal with some of the National Gallery of Art’s most prized collections—and uncover some hidden gems along the way—on this comprehensive art tour.

The National Gallery of Art opened its doors in 1941 as a museum devoted to the people of the United States. Its founder, financier, and art collector Andrew W. Mellon, believed the nation deserved a collection that was open and free to the public—one that could hold its own with the greatest art collections in the world.

Follow an art historian guide through the NGA’s West Building, looking at some of the earliest masterworks in the 13th- and 14th-century Italian galleries. Then explore everything from Dutch and Flemish paintings of the 17th century to American and British paintings of the 19th century.

See world-famous works by Rembrandt, Claude Monet, Jan Van Eyck, Johannes Vermeer, JMW Turner, and many others. And spend time admiring Leonardo da Vinci’s only portrait in America, an oil-on-wood painting of the 15th-century Florentine aristocrat Ginevra de’ Benci.

Develop active “looking” skills and learn to think like an artist. Learn about the development of major genres of western art like portraiture, still-life, and landscapes, and discuss national art schools like London’s Royal Academy, Philadelphia’s Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and New York’s National Academy of Design.

The meeting point was so badly described in the lnformation that I asked four differnt officials at the Museum and got three different directions. As I was early I phoned the travell agent¨s "hot-line" three (3) times prior to the depature time of the tour, but was directed to their voice mail. I left a message for them to call me with my name, tour and tele no, but no one came back (and has still not done so). Consequently, I missed the tour.

Our guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Her enthusiasm was contagious and my granddaughter and I had a wonderful time. There was confusion about where to meet. Visitor's instructions were incorrect.

The guide was knowledgeable and very pleasant. She gave us an overview of the collection from a historical perspective. The art was breathtaking including the only DaVinci portrait in the Western Hemisphere and a grand selection of Manet, Monet and van Gogh. We saw how Cezanne was the precursor to Cubism and the impact of photography on art. We could never have seen so much on our own! Thank you!

Our tour guide, Abram Fox, is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. He brings insight and interest to what might have appeared "only" to be paint on canvases. He provided a historical timeline for the art we viewed, presenting it in an evolutionary manner that completely added to our enjoyment. This is definitely the way to see an art gallery.

This was a great tour. We recommend it highly. Our guide is an art history PhD candidate, made the tour very informative and entertaining for my 12 year old grandson, and learned a lot of new things.
