Our first tour was cancelled due to strong winds but the company was very accommodating in rescheduling us later that week. Our tour guides were very friendly and helpful! They were always looking out for our safety and ensuring we had a good time. We spent a while hiking on the ice and the guides made sure to point out everything that we saw. Very fun and informative! Truly a once in a lifetime experience.

We had a great experience on this tour. We were staying in Reykjavik, so having chosen an 11am start, we left our hotel at 8am to have plenty of time. There are a couple of other sites that you can visit en route - we stopped at the Skogafoss waterfall which is just a few miles from the glacier itself.
When we arrived we met our guide who gave us the equipment we needed for the hike including crampons and a hard hat. You also get an ice pick but we were assured this was mostly to make the photos look good. First up, the walk to the base of the glacier is around 20 minutes. There we put on the crampons and had a brief intro to know how to use them effectively, and using the ice pick to help balance going up and downhill.
We then started the ascent up some carved steps in the ice. The crampons take some getting used to as you have a basic level of fear of slipping as you are walking on sheet ice! Our guide, Laura, did a great job explaining the features of the glacier as we went up, stopping to take pictures at good points. There were quite a few groups on the glacier, all being guided, so it felt quite busy, but we weren't rushed at all.
We reached the open part of the glacier surface, which is amazingly sheer, albeit with cracks across the surface. Without the crampons you would literally just slide off with nothing to stop you! After some time taking pictures we then started the route down, which was actually more difficult than the route up. We did the hike with our 14 and 11 year old daughters who both did great.
Overall whilst this is an 'easy' hike, it does tax the nerves a little, but in a good way! It's not physically exerting, but only small sections are roped, so you need to be confident in your movement. Overall a great experience and we were so lucky with the weather which helped!

We had the pleasure to go on a super exciting tour with our guide, Maria. She was always attentive and patient with everyone so even if you had some fears or issues, you were in good hands. I highly recommend the tour as it is something you would not be able to do in other countries.

Viator reviews tend to look similar...

Viator reviews tend to look similar and sterile to the point that I wonder if they're real. But rest assured this one is - and this tour is particularly f-ing good to borrow language I don't see in most reviews
The tour works like this: meet at parking lot, get gear, walk 30m to glacier, spend 60-90m on ice, walk 30m back, return gear. Arctic Adventures was the tour operator and even though they offered the cheapest Solheimajokull experience it was just as good as every other tour I saw operating that day. I don't know why other tours charge more for the same thing.
It is truly acceptable for unathletic types and it is not short on stunning views. You would think that walking for an hour on some ice wouldn't be all that interesting but this was a trip highlight. I've got some great photos and I learned a lot. We were lucky to have a particularly warm December day 3C for our 10a departure and it was comfortable in my single layer of jeans and multi layers on top with coat. The tour will rent waterproof clothing for a nominal fee but I'd consider this unnecessary unless it's raining. My wife rented pants - they smelled musty.
The guide, Jo, was good and knowledgeable. I could tell that our safety was her first priority.
The glacier is within easy distance of several good waterfalls and sights. With the 10 am start, even with sunset at 330p there was enough time to do this tour, go to Dyrhólaey Lighthouse, have a late sit-down lunch, and see Seljalandsfoss within the same short daylight.
