The tour starts form our tour office: Franz Josefs Kai 45 (Metro U2 / U4 Schottenring, take exit “Schottenring” or “Salztorbrücke”.

9:30 AM
Spittelau , 1090 Vienna, Austria
Greet your guide at the Vienna Explorer tour office on Franz Josefs Kai and make your way to a local metro station. From here, you’ll take the metro to a train station and board a train destined for the Wachau Valley — a luscious region replete with vineyards, wineries and quaint villages.

On arrival in the valley, collect your modern bikes and listen to a short safety briefing. The gentle, 15-mile (24-km) route is comprised primarily of cycle paths and quiet roads, ensuring you’ll feel safe and secure throughout.

Pedal beside the picturesque Danube River and feast your senses on stunning scenery before stopping at your first winery to sample the local bounty. During each tasting, a wine expert will detail the production processes and subtle tastes of each wine.

Midway through the day, you’ll stop in the charming village of Dürnstein to explore during free time. Opt to ascend to the ruins of a fortress used to incarcerate King Richard the Lionhear or simply relax on the beach beside the Danube. Swimming is optional so bring along a towel and bathing suit if you’d like to dip in the Danube.

After lunch in a local tavern, continue cycling to your final winery before returning to the train station for the transfer back to Vienna.

The cycling through beautiful villages and vineyards, the wine tasting and the dip in the Danube. The guide was organised and helpful.

Great must do experience. It was so nice to go outside of the city of Vienna. It takes an hour to get there by train but it is a pretty and relaxing train ride. The biking was beautiful and the wineries were fun. The biking was mostly all on bike paths and very doable for those that have ridden a bike before but aren’t active bikers. Our guide Francis was fantastic we would definitely do this tour again.

Wine and Biking - Nothing could go wrong!

Overall, a wonderful experience that we would highly recommend. Our guide, Thomas, was awesome and quite knowledgeable about the Wachau wine region and wine (he comes from a family of winemakers). He is clearly very proud of Austrian wine and loves to talk about them. For the tour - you meet your guide at the Vienna Explorer bike shop and then take the train to Krems (about an hour). Thomas was very good about alerting folks as to where the next bathroom break could be - very important on a nearly 9 hour tour. Overall the bike trail was moderate activity level, not super easy but not too difficult. First stop was Domane Wachau vinery (6 wine tastings) followed by lunch in Durnstein. Thomas ordered the food in advance (takes your order while on the train), and the food was absolutely delicious. Second wine tasting was at Weisskirchen (again 6 wines). Then back through Durnstein (quick stop to swim in the Danube if desired), and then to Krems to catch the train back to Vienna. The view along the route is beautiful - Thomas was great about stopping occasionally to gather the group together but also to talk about the Wachau Valley and take photos. The only negative aspect would be the size of the group - 18 is a lot of people and it can take a bit to corral everyone together.

Great introduction to the Wachau

We had a beautiful, sunny day for our ride. As a result, the setting was idyllic. We had a view of the Danube most of the way, surrounded by the vineyard-covered, rolling hills with an occasional small Austrian town along the way. My only wish was that we had more time to explore the towns and wineries that we stopped at. Our tour guide, Laendre (sp?), was very attentive and a joy to bike with.

My son and I had a wonderful time biking through the Wachau Valley with Jamie and Alexandra and 10 others. The meet up location was very easy to find and everyone immediately began greeting each other and becoming acquainted. Alexandra and Jamie were very nice to circulate throughout the day and get to know each of us. I think their friendly manner encouraged everyone. It was nice to have coffee and a croissant to snack on while taking the train out of Vienna. We were a little ahead of schedule before the train, so some were able to make purchases if they wanted a snack. Once we arrived at the train station, we took a bus to the city due to train track maintenance, although it sounded like that was not a frequent occurrence. We walked to pick up our bikes and off we went! We had a guide in front and a guide as caboose. Typically, they would have just one guide per group, but since it was the beginning of the season, we had two. We spent the day riding from town to town. Our guides have historical and cultural information as we rode along. We took frequent breaks along the way. The wine tastings were very nice. We tasted several wines - all were very good. We stopped for lunch about halfway through the day. Everyone at our table liked their meal. I had chicken salad - fresh greens with lightly breaded chicken on top that was piping hot. Others had goulash and wiener schnitzel. We took a different route back than on the way out, which was a treat. I recommend bringing a small snack for the ride back. The distance is manageable, but I was a bit tired about half way back. Be sure to bring a water bottle, too. You will be glad you have it! You can refill along the way at the wineries and at lunch. This was such a fun tour! We really enjoyed becoming acquainted with so many internationals. Our group was made up of tourists from America, UK, Denmark, Greece, China, and Canada. Thanks to Alexandra and Jamie for spending the day with us and keeping us on track! Bonus** don’t miss the ice cream once you drop off your bikes. It’s very tasty and especially good after a day on the bike trail.

We can’t recommend this tour more to anyone wanting a memorable day on their Vienna trip. From the start we had a very warm welcome, our group was small of about 10 which felt very personable and got to know our hosts. We took the bus as there were some rail disruptions but it didn’t feel like a problem and the journey was very smooth. The entire cycle tour was beautiful, with incredible views of the river, stopping at various points to take photos and hear a bit of history about the area. At the first place we had around 4 wines, mostly whites and one rose, all delicious. The lunch spot was perfect, quick and tasty and we had a chance to explore the shops and historic blue church. On the second winery stop we had another 3/4 wines and sat outside in a lovely big garden amongst locals. We were made to feel very comfortable by both hosts, even though my partner and I rode close to the guide they would often stop to check the back of the group were all okay. The lanes are perfect for cycling - mostly quite smooth and wide. We were extremely lucky with the weather, sunny and warm the whole day, but had the weather been worse it still would have been a wonderful day. Although it’s a mostly flat journey, it’s worthwhile taking it easy on the journey there to preserve energy for the route home. Jamie was a fabulous host, very personable and fun. Would love to do it again! Ps we even managed to take a dip in the river - so wear shorts if it’s a warm day.

Tomas was a really good tour guide with the personal touch. In for a chat and had answers on every question. The biking part was not hard at all and because our big group was doing so well in cycling, there was even enough space in the planning for a dive in the Donau if you wanted to! I recommend this tour to everyone who likes wines and a bit of a exercise.

Biking and wine tasting

Biking through the area with vineyards and walking through the small towns. Iolo was an excellent guide. I think the maximum should be about 10 or 12. I believe we had 15-17 and that size slowed us down. The wine tasting was excellent and enjoyed the variety. The day will be very memorable!

We rode through lovely small towns and wonderful landscapes; and everybody loved the wines. The views from the Dürnstein castle definitely make the hike worth it. Overall a great day out. Iolo, our guide, was very informative, cheerful and very patient. And the pace he set for the tour was just perfect. Next time we'll be in Austria we'll definitely check for another tour with him.

Overall a Great trip . It was a good experience to see life outside of the city of vienna . Fab selection of wines to try and informative. The bike riding was an enjoyable smooth pace and at no point did we feel rushed . Fairly priced and friendly tour guide . Very impressed by the company allowing the trip to go ahead with less people than usual - otherwise we would of missed out .
