Overview

Experience Austria’s top UNESCO-listed highlights—Salzburg, the Wachau Valley, and the Salzkammergut—in one day on a trip from Vienna. Admire the wine country of Wachau and Salzkammergut’s mountains and lakes before arriving in Salzburg, Mozart’s birthplace and the setting for ‘The Sound of Music.’ Tour Salzburg's must-sees, including Mozart's House and the Mirabell Gardens, and then stroll and relax independently. Hotel pickup and drop-off included.
  • Day trip to Salzburg from Vienna
  • Admire UNESCO-listed scenery on a drive through Wachau and the Salzkammergut
  • View Salzburg’s must-sees including the Cathedral and Mozart’s House
  • See the Mirabell Palace and Gardens, the setting for 'Do-Re-Mi' in 'The Sound of Music'
  • Enjoy free time to shop, eat and stroll in Salzburg Old Town
  • Travel by air-conditioned minivan or coach, with guided commentary
  • Hotel pickup and drop-off in central Vienna included
After early pickup from your hotel in central Vienna, leave the Austrian capital and journey west toward Salzburg. Pass through the rolling hills and vineyards of UNESCO-listed Wachau along the River Danube—an area famous for the Benedictine monastery of Melk—and hear information about the region from your guide.

Stop for breakfast (own expense), and then continue into another UNESCO World Heritage gem: the Salzkammergut region of mountains and lakes that played a starring role in 'The Sound of Music.' Admire the lakes and villages, and hear fascinating snippets about the area’s history before arriving in Salzburg.

Take a walking tour of the UNESCO-protected Old Town with your guide, seeing landmarks including the Cathedral, Mozarteum, and St. Peter’s Cemetery, whose colonnades famously provided hiding for the Von Trapp family in the 1960 musical.

Wander along the cobbled Getreidegasse shopping street, and learn about Salzburg’s most famous former resident, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, as you pause outside the composer’s house.

See the Mirabell Palace and its gardens, the backdrop to the famous 'Do Re Mi' scene in The Sound of Music, and take in the views from here up to the Hohensalzburg, the hilltop fortress looming over the city.

After your tour, enjoy free time to explore independently. Perhaps delve into the cobbled alleyways to shop, enjoy a late lunch (own expense) or sightsee further, perhaps visiting Mozart’s House or St. Peter’s Abbey.

When it’s time, rejoin your guide and relax on your scenic ride back to Vienna. Your tour concludes with a drop-off at your central Vienna hotel.

This trip is highly recommended! The tour guide was very informative and let us go around and explore on our own after showing us the best spots. Even though it was raining we had an amazing time. I only wish the pick ups could be accessible for the Vienna suburbs

Pick up was on time and the drive was great, had 2 stops at nice places for bathrooms and something to eat. Driver was also our tour guide and was very nice and knowledgeable. Had plenty of time to look around on our own too. Salzburg was easy enough to get around and was so charming . Of course the Sound of Music highlights were awesome. It was kinda gloomy but still worth it!

Trip was good and very pretty scenery, but walking tour was too long, especially in the wind and cold and rain. Guide didn't let us know how long it was going to be so we could have stopped early and took us to the far reaches where it was hard to find our way back to our ride. Should have been offered the chance to stop before end of walking tour and have an easier way to return to our ride back.

Didn't realize that this tour included a walking tour, but would be ok, except for execptionally long walk and bad weather. Guide took us to far without letting us know how far he was taking us and was difficult finding our way back in the wind and cold and rain. Weather was lousy and that played a part, but overall the tour was very pretty. Would recommend going in good weather and be prepared for long walk or don't go all the way. Had great lunch at oldest restaurant in Vienna at the end of the walk. Expensive, but worth it.

If you visit Vienna , you HAVE TO dedicate a day to Salzburg. Organized trip with great tour by the on-the-site (Salzburg expert) guide. Our driver-guide was Andy. He made us feel comfortable from the first minute, taking care of all our needs. Really willing to provide information about Vienna and Salzburg during the trip. His Mediterranean temperament really added up to the whole experience!
