A good overview to see only a couple of sites
, Oct 2019
First, there are at least two companies doing HOHO tours on the island. Read the maps carefully so you know whether the one you choose is going to the place(s) you want to visit. The tour takes a very long time to run through its route (almost three hours). This can be a nice trip when the weather is good and you could use a nice breeze. Since it takes so long to get around the island, you really only have time to see one or two sites before the bus circulation ends (late afternoon). Actually, there isn't that much to see from the bus, although it is nice to be able to get an overview of the southern (more interesting) part of the island. Your alternative is to take a bus to the sites you are interested in and if you are a confident traveler, you might want to do that. Traffic on the island is slow-moving and the streets are narrow, hence the long tour even though the distances are not that great. Commentary on board was okay. I stopped off at the Temples, which was a fascinating site, but when I got on the bus to travel again and then get off at the Limestone Heritage Park and Gardens, the driver told me they were closed on Mondays. I took his word for it and passed on it, only to learn later that their website said it was indeed open on Mondays. Very disappointed about that. Otherwise, I recommend this is you want to relax, get a general sense of the island and visit one or two sites of special interest to you, but start early in the day so you can get them in.

The ride was long and arduous around and around steep winding and twisting hills of Malta. It is very confusing to find out where to meet the bus. It took over an hour and a half to get back to the port from our last stop. We only got to three of the locations. Spend the extra money and take a taxi. There is a lot to see.

A good way to move around the island
, Oct 2019
It is a good way to see a number of places of interest if you do not want to travel on a normal bus or buy an organised tour. However, you must be prepared to walk a bit further on some occasions (to Tarxien Temples or to the Blue Grotto view point). The bus is not always on time, as it came once 10 minutes before schedule. The bus stops are not well marked so if you do not remember the point where it stopped, you might not be able to find it. Still, it enabled us to see what we wanted although you might need to be prepared to skip some points of interest to see the most famous ones. You will also need to be prepared to walk fast if you want to see most of them. I managed to see Tarxien temples (I had not been able to book Hypogeum tickets three months in advance and i appreciate that you would require more time in the neighborhood if you did want to see it as well), Marsaxlokk Village, Blue Grotto (motorboat trip into the caves + viewpoint, but be prepared to walk up! it is quite strenuous it being on the hill - therefore, I would welcome an additional stop near Panorama stop) as well as Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temples. Overall, I am happy with the tour!

If you can travel independently and not rely on the hop on hop off buses you would get to see much more in a day. It was a nice, pleasant trip though.
