Sunrise on top of the world
, Jul 2019
Everything about our private hiking trip to see the sunrise on Mt Batur was terrific. We stayed in Ubud, so our pickup time was 2:30am and Wayan, our driver, was right on time. We met up with Kadek, our guide, at the base camp. He was terrific, full of interesting information and ready to help at every step. He even offered to carry our heavy backpack for us (we did not let him do that, but how nice to have the option if needed)! This was an amazing experience we will never forget- many thanks to Viator, Kadek and Wayan for everything- we highly recommend this excursion. Here is some general info to consider if you are thinking about this trip: - We are in our early 50’s, and in good physical condition- by that I mean we are not triathletes, Crossfitters or power lifters, but we do work out and are pretty active. If you are a couch potato, you might consider a different tour. This was very challenging- the second half of the climb is exceptionally steep, with lots of loose rocks, slippery sand, uneven footing, etc. It’s absolutely do-able for folks in average shape, but expect a workout. We were tired and sore the next day. - Flashlights are provided, but we recommend bringing your own inexpensive headlamps so both your hands can be free. - You need at least a sturdy pair of athletic shoes with good support and enclosed- tevas, keens, any kind of sandals are a no-go. Lots of sand and stones to get in open shoes. - We wore shorts with long sleeve shirts on the way up and sweated our butts off. But the minute you get to the top you’ll be really cold (wind plus exposure). They rent blankets at the top, and while we were fine with the tradeoff, just know you might spend a chilly 45 min or so until the sun rises. All sweaty again on the way down.
Awe-inspiring Morning with a patient, fun, and knowledgeable

An early morning wake up call that was well worth it, despite a foggy morning. First, its not an EASY hike, wear proper tennis shoes or even hiking boots. Also, be ready for some heart pounding climbing. But don't let this detour you, the feeling of accomplishment and then the incredible views from the top are something you will never forget. Pro move - buy some headlamps to make it a bit easier as the torches they hand out aren't so powerful. Also, make sure you dress in layers, I was so hot on the way up I just wore a tank top, but then I was chilled at the top, so I was forced to rent a blanket to keep warm. The banana sandwich and hard boiled eggs were a lovely touch. Our guide really took his time and ensured we went at our pace. Then at the top, he took as many pictures as we wanted and knew all the best spots. We lingered at the top and let the crowds start to go down and then explored the crater area and the ''natural over'' where we could see and feel the steam coming from the volcano. The monkeys also came out after sunrise, we got to see enough of them that we skipped the monkey forests. I wore Nike Metcons, and had the worst time going back down. We chose the ''easier'' way but the loose gravel and my shoes didn't mix. I slipped and fell on my butt a few times, nothing more than ego and a sore butt, but still find good shoes. Back to our hotel in time for a short nap and spa in the afternoon. Highly recommend this tour!
This is a once in a life time...

This is a once in a life time experience! We had an amazing time. I recommend it greatly! We were picked up 2am in the morning in a nice AC controlled car, Baru was a great driver and answered all of our questions, very nice and attentive. At the mount Batur we met out hiking guide who was ready with flashlights, water bottles and great attitude. The hike is moderate difficulty, but our guide let us walk in our own rhythm and never rushed us or held us back- was great. The sunrise at the top was breathtaking - you have an amazing view of mount Agung and the lake Batur! I can't recommend this tour enough! Personalised experience, all centred around you getting the best adventure.
Amazing - highly recommended. Better...

Amazing - highly recommended. Better to go privately with a guide than in a big group, much more personalised and informative plus can climb at your own speed. Get up to the second point highest as the fog/clouds sometimes make the first one have no view!
