A Sword lesson to remember

This was one of the best experiences in Japan. The whole tour and experience were so well organised, the location was inspiring... and the teacher took me in time and me feel part of the culture through this hour's training... fun, educational and surely very memorable. The lady who was running the tour took all the perfect photographs... would surely recommend it.

24 year old grandson and nephew took a lesson and they loved it. Using the real katana and able to cut the tatami pole was their highlight! Teacher was very good with sense of humor. At first I thought the price was high but it was worth it.

I got this as a surprise for my husband on our trip to Japan this year. He had THE BEST TIME! And so did I. Our guide came to our hotel to pick us up, guided us through the train station with ease, gave us a short pre-lesson on the train, and acted as an AMAZING photographer during our session. The samurai descendant and his team were amazing, funny, kind, and helpful. They gave us an awesome demonstration, showed us the basic moves, and let us try our hand at slicing through bamboo mats with the katanas we'd just learned how to yield. They were SO kind and accommodating. My husband said it's been the highlight of our 2 weeks in Japan. I cannot recommend this enough!!!

This lesson was definitely one of the highlights of my trip to Japan. The lesson felt very authentic and made it feel like you were in an actual dojo. The instructor was very knowledgeable and a very accomplished swordsman, who did a very good job explaining how to perform the cross cut. He also gave us a very informative and interesting lesson on the the different aspects of being a samurai in order to give context to what we were learning. Our translator and guide, as well as the other staff, were very respectful and courteous. I highly recommend this experience to anyone who is interested in learning how to cut with a Katana.

One of the Tokyo trip highlights for my family and kids. Didn't have any Viator reviews to read when we booked, so a little hesitant, but so glad I trusted my gut. Met by a very friendly local Japanese woman who spoke good English--she walked and rode the subway with us to the Ginza studio. Studio is upscale on a luxury street in Ginza. Upon arrival, staff helped us dress into Samurai clothing--very fastidious and took about 15 minutes--treat it as an honor. Staff very friendly and helpful. The Samurai met us in the large studio classroom where we started with a group lesson 5 people with dull-blade swords. Samurai was very friendly, interested in sharing his expertise and helping us learn, and yet serious because he wants to make sure that everyone knows you can get hurt if not careful. Proud of his expertise. All good. After the group lesson, each participant was able to swing a sharp blade Samurai sword and cut through rolled tatami mats stuck vertically onto a post--to represent a human neck. Samurai guided through the entire process and was very encouraging. Two women, two men, and one child for our lesson. Game of Thrones fans, this is a chance to swing a real, 80yr old sword and really cut something. Exhilarating and a unique learning experience. Only bring kids who can self-control behavior and understand the need to be respectful to the staff and surroundings. Young kids who cannot participate can dress and watch while sitting in a chair IF AND ONLY IF can be completely quiet the entire time without need for video games to keep them quiet. Our 5yr old enjoyed watching silently. Be respectful and this will be an experience you and your family remember for the rest of your life.
