Tauranga Shore Excursion

Alistair gave a great tour of Tauranga and Rotorua area. Stops at Kiwi farms, geysers, hot mud pools and other thermal activity. Spent time at an active Maori village and saw a great show there. Pick up and drop off right at the cruise ship dock.

Alastair was n exceptional host. Informative and friendly. Wai O Tapu extra long walk was worth the trip. Mauri village also a highlight.

We must assume that you were not on the same tour as the review below. At Wai-O-Tapu there are a few options for the walk, short, medium and long, as we try and adjust this to suit the level of ability of our guests. We fit a lot into this 8 hour tour, Wai-O-Tapu, the Te Whakarewarewa Living Maori Village and cultural concert, plus some others stops along the way. Pleased you enjoyed the experience and gave Alistair a 5 star review.

Good Trip - not a small group
Sydney_B
, Feb 2020
Great tour but it was definitely not a small group! There were 21 people on the bus and the schedule was very structured, yet we did not make it to Geyser in time for its eruption. And at Wai o Tapu, we had to wait for everyone to go in together as the guide had the tickets and since people left stuff in the van it took a while to rally everyone, which cut into our time we could've spent in the park. The Maori village was very beautiful!

Hi Sydney B, i can not comment on the issue about you missing the geyser erupting as we do not know which day you travelled on. The geyser at Wai-O-Tapu erupts every day at 10:15 in the morning. The drive from the port is around 1 hour and 30 minutes minimum, depending on traffic, so on some days if we start the tour after 08:45 then you may miss the eruption. The start time of the tour is dependant on the arrival time of the ship, we can not usually depart any sooner than 60 minutes after the ship is alongside the pier. We do our best to give all our clients a good time, on some really busy days we do run this tour in 22 and 24 seater coaches, on others like today, we had just 4 persons. If we knew which day you travelled we could check the issue with the times. If you do not want to share tours with other passengers frtom the ship then we do offer the option to book a private tour, then you do not have to put up with other passengers who leave things on the bus. Pleased you enjoyed the Maori Village. Regards Ian

Great day out at Wai O Tapu etc

Well organised schedule. Peter was most informative, happy to answer any questions about New Zealand. Ran to a tight schedule, no waiting about for long lunches, this maximised the itinerary. Meeting point easy to find.

Thanks for the review, we do have to keep on track with this tour as we try and fit in the best two geothermal sites. Pleased you found the instructions about our meeting point easy to follow. Seems that we still have quite a few clients who are unable to follow these simple instructions - "down the gangway, turn left, walk about 100 meters, go through the security gate, we are outside on the grass by the flag poll" Regards Ian

Perfect organization. Best trip to visit volcanic valley, especially when doing as shore excursion coming from a cruise
icon Response from Host , Feb 2020
Thanks for your kind comments, we do try to be as organised as possible as on some days we have over 300 clients taking our independent tours with over 25 minibuses, so we can not afford to be anything but organised. Just had 9 days in a row of ships so today we are all breathing a sigh of relief before it all starts again tomorrow. Regards Ian

An Experience Not to be Missed.

We have been on many Viator excursions and this one without a doubt may prove to be one of our favorites. This was our first stop on a 14 day cruise and we were hopeful it would set the tone for what was to come. That it did and more. Our guide Alistair met us at the designated point and proceeded to all the destinations listed. This was while giving us a narration of the geological features, culture and history of the land and its people. Although given a somewhat tight time frame for all there was to experience, Alistair proved masterful in making the journey most enjoyable and informative.

Thanks for your review, you chose a great tour [one of my favourites] and Alistair is a great guide. many clients are now booking direct with us for all of their ports of call as we have a very wide range of options in all ports of call in New Zealand, with over 350 tour options to choose from. Regards Ian

Great experience
Lauren_B
, Jan 2020
This was a long tour, but a great day. We were picked up right outside the gates of the cruise port so it was very easy to find. The drive (which was long) had some stunning scenery and the driver was quite knowledgeable of the area. Lady Knox geyser was unfortunately a bit lack-luster that day (due to the activity earlier in the weeks before with the White Island volcano erupting). We then visited the Wai-O-Tapu wonderland which was fun to see, especially the Champagne Pool (but it does smell terrible so be aware of that!). Following this was the Maori Village which was really cool, we have done cultural tours like that before and are often disappointed, but this was not the case this time! On the way back to the ship we also stopped at a Kiwi orchard and a building that I think was a museum (which was a little pointless). Overall though a good tour for the price.

Thanks for your feedback, Wai-O-Tapu is another half hour beyond Rotorua so that does make it one of the longer tours from Tauranga. The geyser is not something we can control [luckily] so its a hit and miss deal with that, but usually its pretty strong. The eruption a few days earlier did have an impact on things. Regards Ian

Nice and informative driver!

, Dec 2019
The driver worked hard to take us around but I wished we had spent more at the Wai-O-Tapu, only 1/2 hr not enough. So much to see. Should had spent less time at the Whare. Mario Village instead. But overall is nice!
icon Response from Host , Dec 2019
Hi, sorry you had only a short time at Wai-O-Tapu, this is unusual as we normally schedule around 2 hours there, time first to see the Lady Knox Geyser erupt at 10.15, then a walk around the geothermal park for about an hour followed by lunch at the cafe. If you can tell us which day you traveled we can check the drivers job sheet for that day. We are also limited by the times the ship arrives and departs and this 8 hour tour has to fit within this, sometimes meaning we can not get to the Geyser Eruption at 1015, making the visit there a little shorter. Hope to hear from you direct so that we can look into this further. Regards Ian

Excellent guide in Andy. He kept us informed throughout the entire day. The kiwi farm was really interesting, as were the Maori village and geysers. Fun-packed day,
