Overview

Get an inside look at what it takes to uncover ancient ruins by visiting Cañada de La Virgen on an archaeologist-led tour. Your guide took part in the site’s 2004 excavation, giving him a unique insight into the relatively-recently uncovered Mesoamerican complex. As you tour the site he can share details you can’t discover on your own and would likely miss on a different guided tour.
  • Explore Cañada de la Virgen with an archaeologist who helped uncover the site
  • A small-group enables the guide to tailor the tour to the group’s interests
  • Enjoy hassle-free transportation in an air-conditioned vehicle
  • Avoid crowds by visiting these lesser-traveled ancient ruins

A terrific experience

Albert’s a special guy, and he brought the site to life. His quick wit, brisk explanations and sense of wonder (still, after leading almost daily tours here) were a treat. Highly recommend.

Really enjoyed this tour of the Pyramid. A unique Mexican pyramid explained by Albert Coffee, an American archeologist who has worked in the area for 18 years and knows what he is talking about. Well done!

Outstanding visit not to be missed

My wife and I loved this tour. Albert is a trained archaeologist and his tour of this pre-hispanic site was informative, captivating and well paced with just enough humor thrown in to keep you smiling. If you can try to combine this tour with a stop at the Museo Astronomia to visit with Dr. Rossana Quiroz Ennis. She is the head of the Celestial Observation Program at Cañada de la Virgen and has made some very interesting discoveries and observations that combined with Albert Coffee's tour really make this an outstanding visit not to be missed.

Great Information, site and guide.

The tour was filed with great sights and an incredible amount of information from our guide. The group was the right size to be able to listen and move efficiently. Take the precaution about the walk seriously - it was strenuous and on uneven surfaces. The steps up to and inside the pyramid itself are steep and narrow.

Fascinating glimpse of Mexican past

While the shuttle bus that took us to Canada de la Virgin was very uncomfortable once we got to the site the rest of the trip was exceptional. I'm not sure you could find anyone more knowledgeable than Albert Coffee to lead the tour. In the approximate three hours he covered a vast amount of information from the history of mesoamerica to the latest research on the history on this site. You do need to be prepared to walk some distance and navigate some tricky, narrows steps into the site. An in-depth insight into the brilliance of the indigenous Mexican people .

Great tour with a great guide. Albert is very knowledgeable and able to convey what he knows in an interesting and captivating way. What a fabulous, enjoyable, informative 1/2 day we had with Albert Coffee yesterday! Whether you’re a history or archeology buff, or just looking for a fascinating tour while in San Miguel de Allende, please do yourself a favor and book this or another of Albert’s tours. He’s super-knowledable, engaging and a fascinating story teller. This tour is a must-do while in SMA! Don’t do a DYI or even the bare-bones version with a Federally licensed worker; you’ll miss the color and texture that brings this tour to life. PS: do bring a hat and sunscreen!

Albert is AH-Mazing!!!

To take a tour of an archaeological site with a man who did his undergraduate degree in Meso American Studies AND actually worked as an archaeologist on this very site was just the most wonderful experience. Albert has a wry, delightful sense of humor that shines through the presentation based in history and facts. The site itself is very unusual in that because it is located on privately held land, there are literally no touristy gee-gaws to have to deal with. Fantastic tour! HIghly recommend it!!!
