Get deep inside the natural world of Puerto Rico on this 7-hour, small-group adventure exploring the more than 60 caves and shelters of the Cabachuelas de Morovi system. Take advantage of special access to this unique subterranean network, located on private property among the bizarre limestone karst formations of the island’s northern coast.

Start the day with pickup around 8am in San Juan, heading out into the strange limestone karst peaks, also known as “haystacks” (mogotes) that dot the island's northern coast. As you arrive at the tour’s starting point, listen to a safety briefing from your guide as you don your equipment, including headlamp, backpack, kneepads, gloves and a helmet, before setting off.

From there, the tour proceeds to four caves, each of which is located on restricted land in a subtropical forest nature reserve. Start at Angel Cave, where you’ll learn how this underground network was formed over millions of years, and view ancient petroglyphs created by the Taíno tribes that once sought shelter inside these rocks.

Continue your journey as you scout for the cave network’s abundant wildlife. On the forest walks between each cave you’ll see many varieties of plants and insects, while the dark interior of the Lizard and Buruquenas caves is home to creatures including spiders, toads, crickets, bats, snakes and several types of crustaceans.

Hike up to 3 Floor Cave, where you’ll admire gorgeous views of the surrounding valley and forest. Then return to your transportation and head to a local restaurant for a hearty lunch of local fare including chicken, rice, beans, yucca and sweet plantains.

With your hunger and urge for exploration now well-satisfied, head back to your hotel in San Juan for drop-off.

Please note: A minimum of two people per booking is required.

After hotel pickup in San Juan, travel with your knowledgeable guide to Las Cabachuelas de Morovis, a network of approx. 60 caves and shelters located in karst country. Marvel at the mogote, or 'haystack,' landscapes of northern Puerto Rico, strewn with overgrown karst limestone peaks. During your 7-hour tour you'll hike to four caves, located on private land in a subtropical forest that's designated as a nature reserve. Your in-the-know guide has made special arrangements with the landowners to allow your small group access to these sites. After a safety briefing, don your gear — including a helmet, headlamp, small backpack, and kneepads and gloves — and set off. In Angel Cave, your guide describes how the caves were formed over millions of years, identifies unique formations and points out petroglyphs created by the Tainos — possible descendants of the Arcaicos tribes — who once inhabited these limestone shelters. The Cabachuelas caves are also home to a dizzying array of ecosystems. Learn about the plant life and insects you pass by during your forest walks. In the caves of Lizard and Buruquenas, expect to encounter many creatures in the dark: spiders, crickets, bats, snakes, toads and a number of crustaceans. Hike up a hill and from inside 3 Floor Cave, look out an opening and capture beautiful views of the valley and forest floor. Around midday, climb back aboard the minivan and head to a local restaurant for hearty Puerto Rican fare, including chicken, rice, beans, yucca and sweet plantains. Your appetite for wondrous sights and delicious food satisfied, enjoy the ride back to your San Juan hotel, with a surprise souvenir in hand. Please note: A minimum of two people per booking is required.

Perfect Excursion Through the Caves
Brandon G

This was a great trip and that's because our guide Robert was THE BEST! He is extremely knowledgeable of the island and the cave system on the island. It was like being on an excursion with a friend. There was a wide variety of caves on the route. Big, small, pitch black, well lit. The hike was exactly the right difficulty (it was a hefty hike). The route he mapped out was also perfect - it was a one large loop from the landowners house and back. Highly recommend!

One of our best activities on our vacation, the challenging trek into the caves and the explorations themselves well worth the price.

Roberto the tour guide and company owner was totally awesome! He personalized the tour, was very friendly and knowledgeable, and helped/ coached me during the more difficult parts of the hike and caving. Roberto provides a small back pack with 2 bottles of water per person, a pair of hiking gloves, knee pads which were used several times, and a helmet with a light. He also records during the hike and makes a personalized video which he emails you the next day so you have a beautiful memory of the hike. He also takes you to eat the most amazing chicken you'll ever try, Puerto Rican food which I adored. You visit 4 caves which are on private property, and Roberto is the only tour guide who has arrangements with these property owners, so you're assured very few people visit these caves. There are Native American petroglyphs and paint art on one of the cave walls. On this tour I saw: bats, two inch roaches, spiders the size of my hand, toads, huge crickets, a boa, and translucent bugs who live in pitch black caverns 24/7. If you're afraid of bugs or getting dirty, or claustrophobic, this tour is not for you. Heads up, there's a good amount of exertion/ hard work involved. I'm only 5'1'' and not athletic so it was pretty hard for me. My husband though, loved it and was pretty easy for him. There are a few places where you have to climb short rock walls and I had a hard time reaching the foot holds, my husband had to push my behind up to boost me, and at one point we had to climb down a rope to reach one of the caves, about 10 feet down. Two of the caves involve going through a tunnel or low wall so you have to crawl on hands and knees and at one point on your stomach to get in or out of some of the caves. Even with the unexpected level of exertion, I would still highly recommend this tour as it's unique and makes you feel like you went exploring parts of the island no one else has seen.

Great trip through undeveloped countryside, and wild caves. My husband and I have eight decades of caving experience wild caves, not tourist caves , and we found our guide, Robert, to be very knowledgeable of the plants and animals both outside and inside the caves. This was exactly what we wanted. All caving gear was provided, including knee pads. If you have been in tourist caves, and want to do something a little more adventurous, this trip is for you. No paved trails, no handrails, no BS about the formations, just straight info without the usual dumbing down. Lunch was provided, and was served at a local roadside chicken barbecue. Along with the chicken there was a variety of local, and to us, exotic, foods. All in all, a great trip, and actually better than we expected.

Uh-mazing. We had the best time on this tour. Robert is the ideal guide - patient and personable and very knowledgable. Plus this was no typical cave tour ... forget the cheesy lighting and guard rails. You put on a helmet and kneepads and really get to know the caves and their inhabitants up close and personal. This was without a doubt a highlight of our trip, and I would highly recommend that anyone headed to Puerto Rico sign up right now!

This tour was the highlight of my trip. This is not your typical commercial tour. We went off the beating path and visited numerous caves. I walked away feeling like I got my moneys worth. Robert was very professional, but also personable . You could tell that he takes pride and care in his tours.
