Make your way off the tourist track for this walking tour through Testaccio, a historical Roman neighborhood. After meeting your food-loving guide, set off on your exploration that introduces you to the local culinary scene.

Stop by shops and eateries like the Barberini pastry shop, where you can sample baked treats that have been enjoyed here for more than 50 years. Visit a food market for a look at high-quality produce, and chat with some of the local vendors. At Testaccio Market, you’ll have the chance to sample authentic buffalo mozzarella and make your own bruschetta.

Next, enjoy a fried rice ball, a local specialty known as suppli, at Trappizino, and then visit one of the neighborhood’s best restaurants for traditional Roman cuisine, where you’ll taste fresh pasta and wine. Other stops on your tour include Giolitti Caffe and Gelateria, where artisan gelato has been made for more than 100 years, and the Volpetti cheese shop, where 150 cheeses can be found.

While you walk, your guide will share some of Rome’s lesser-known history and point out sights like the city’s only pyramid and the Protestant Cemetery, where John Keats is buried. Your tour ends just a couple of blocks from your starting point; you are free to continue exploring on your own from here, or hop on public transport, a short walk away.

A "Must Do" Rome Food Experience
landryduvall
, Jan 2020
We did this toward the end of our time in Rome, and I have to say I think it was everyone's favorite culinary experience! We were in a group of 9 and walked around Testaccio (Which is definitely off the beaten path - which is great) eating a variety of foods and sampling wine. All in all the tour is about 4 hours.. which seems like a long time but it was perfect. We had the time to get to know the other people on our tour and really take in everything we were doing. Believe me you will not need to eat another meal after this tour... the portions are very filling. I highly recommend this experience!

An insider's view of testaccio

We met proprietors and tasted their wares across Testaccio and in the Testaccio market. Highlights were the visit to ristorante Masto, and the suplici vendor in the market. The visit to the Protestant cemetery was also memorable. Thanks to Val our tour guide, for the great tour as well as tips about where to eat (and not to eat)in Rome.

We love food tours. This was one of the best we’ve had. Incredible guide Valentina, friendly and charming store owners. The food was amazing (come hungry). Lots of local history too. The neighborhood is off the usual path and a nice break from the crowds. Can’t recommend this enough.

What a fantastic way to spend 3 and a half hours. This was spot on. We enjoyed the culinary specialties of this very real neighbourhood. It was lively, friendly, perfect food with the delightful guide, Michele. This tour was so good we did their Naples food tour which was every bit as good.

My wife and I enjoyed this tour very much. We left stuffed and happy. We were able to try Italian food and learn about the history of Italy and the cute town we were in. I would highly recommend this tour. Our Rouen guide Luke, our tour guide was very welcoming and knowledgeable. I recommend coming to this tour with an empty stomach, you will try lots of delicious foods and wines.

Great way to taste all the Roman foods!

The Testaccio area was full of goodies! And it seemed a bit less touristy than other areas of Rome, which was a big plus. We enjoyed the walking around and tasting our way through the neighborhood. We went to a handful of shops, tasted cheeses, meats, bruschetta, etc. The standout of this tour was Mr. Emiliano from MASTO, where we tasted wine, cheese, meats and chocolate. Emiliano was a fantastic host. He was knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and funny, making this portion of the tour particularly memorable. After our stop at Masto, we went to a market where the locals do their food shopping! At the market, we also tasted the BEST Suppli from a small booth called Food Box. And then we made our way to a restaurant called Flavio Al Velavevodetto where we had the Roman classics Cacio e pepe and Amatriciana. Buonissimo! We, of course, ended the tour with GELATO at Gelateria Giolitti. SO GOOD!

Fabulous day of tasting and experiencing wonderful Italian treats!

Rishad, our guide, was absolutely one of the best "tour guides" we have ever encountered. Not only was he extremely knowledgeable about Italian cuisine, he was fun and interesting and made the tour top notch! Having studied in the USA, his english was perfect, which really helped my husband. The small intimate places he introduced us to were terrific and his explanation of Italian cuisine was second to none. Not only did we learn allot, but we tasted MANY new things and even enjoyed a hearty pasta lunch which was so good- we went back again before we left Rome. I have been on other food tours and this by far was my favorite. Take the time to get out of hectic city and enjoy some local flavor...you will never forget it. Thank you Rishad!!!
