Your day trip from Rome starts as you leave the city by air-conditioned vehicle for the drive to the coast, where you’ll hop aboard a ferry for the ride across the Tyrrhenian Sea to Ponza Island, located 21 miles (34 km) offshore. When you arrive, trade the ferry boat for a converted fishing boat, on which you’ll enjoy a cruise around the island with your captain, an island native, as well as other Italians visiting Ponza.

Hear interesting stories about the Italian island and its history between stops at some of its most beautiful coves and bays, where you’ll have lots of time to jump in the water for refreshing dips. A swimmer’s paradise, Ponza offers idyllic locations where you can swim and admire the way the water’s color varies between shades of blue and light green. Go snorkeling, if you wish (you may include equipment rental when booking), or just lay your towel on the boat deck to work on your tan.

You’ll enjoy lunch on the boat whipped up by your captain, who prepares a fresh pasta marinara (mariner’s style), served with wine and bottled water. Check out some of the many grottos (sea caves) sprinkled along the cliffs.

After the boat cruise, enjoy free time on the island to explore its narrow streets on your own or shop for gifts in one of the boutiques near the port, if you wish. When your time on Ponza ends, return to the mainland, and then hop in your tour vehicle for the drive back to Rome, where your day trip concludes.

A fabulous trip - a day to remember

My husband and I booked this trip as part of our holiday to Rome for our 1st wedding anniversary. It was a long day but definitely worth it!! There's about 3 hours travelling before getting on the boat so take some breakfast as it's an early start! The boat was quite small but has everything you need including a top deck for sunbathing. The tuna pasta we had for lunch was lovely and a rather large portion too! We stopped at 4 different spots to jump off the boat and swim. Our favourite was the last one which you can swim through the grotto. It's beautiful :) You get about an hour to explore Ponza Island before the ferry back. We had just enough time to walk round and get an ice-cream and a beer which was perfect. Gina our guide was lovely and very welcoming and informative! Thank you for a fabulous day - highly recommended!

Fun trip, Gina was awesome. The microphones on the bus and ship could be a little bit clearer, but overall we enjoyed the day. Water was absolutely beautiful at every stop.

We had a full day of fun with Gina as our guide. The views were spectacular and we got to jump off the boat several times. I brought my two adult daughters and they LOVED the entire day. We would love to do this again and highly recommend to all travelers. My one daughter gets motion sickness easily and was a little woozy from the waves but a kind woman had some ginger candies and they helped immensely. The ferry ride was easy too. Just a wonderful day overall. If you can get a day away from the city, do it.

Great Day Trip from Rome

We booked this excursion for three families (6 adults & 10 children ranging in age from 8 to 15). We were a little concerned about the 13-hour duration of the tour, but this proved unwarranted as the time went by very quickly. The five hours spent on the boat that took us to five different snorkeling spots was amazing. We enjoyed getting into the water especially with the 38C/100F temp. The tuna pasta served onboard at one of the stops was tasty. They prepared plain pasta for those who do not like fish. There was one unfortunate issue for a young woman who is allergic to fish. They ran out of the plain pasta. They made another serving for her but unfortunately the serving utensils had already touched the fish pasta. If you’re not into fish or pasta, you may want to bring your own lunch or food. Perhaps one of the highlights was swimming through the grottoes. Despite the lengthy travel time on a bus and boat to and from the island, we still loved the trip and are talking about doing it again. We also want to thank Gina, our guide. She was exceptionally friendly and helpful throughout the trip.

Wonderful Day

Our day began early with a rain shower, but thankfully it didn't last and the weather was stellar. Our guide, Gina, was waiting for us when we arrived at the pickup point. We loved the comfortable small bus, and the commentary along the way to the ferry. Gina accompanied the group the entire day. When we arrived at Ponza our boat was ready and we set off. Oh my! This place is so beautiful! Gina's explanations along the way showcased many of the amazing sights on this small volcanic island. We stopped several times to swim and explore. The colour of the sea is breathtaking and the water is clear as blue glass. Lunch was served on the boat by our captain, a friendly and personable individual. When we arrived back in Ponza town we had a little time to explore before returning to the mainland. All in all, it was a fabulous day and we loved it. I definitely recommend it as the whole experience was wonderful. If you're prone to motion sickness, do come prepared with anti-nausea medication or acupressure wrist bands, but don't let the possibility of a little queasiness prevent you from taking the trip. It's exceptional.

This was absolutely gorgeous and well worth the trip. The trip there is 1 hour by bus and 1.5 on the ferry. Just nap and it goes quickly. Eat well before going. My husband and I made the mistake of eating light and we got very lightheaded on the boat until we were able to eat lunch. The tuna pasta for lunch was ok. It’s canned tuna by the way. A great trip overall. Sleep well the night before and take the naps because it is a long day of fun in the sun. You will be exhausted afterwards.

Went on with my 6 family members and had such a blast. Everything was so well organized and enjoyable for all of us. Stopped at 5 swim stops and got to swim in grottos and sea caves. Gina was awesome, and super informative. The long transportation is definitely worth it!
