For a twist on the usual sightseeing experience, take an after-dark tour of Rome to admire its illuminated landmarks and monuments while listening to stories about ghosts, myths and legends. You’ll explore the winding alleys and squares in the city’s historical center with a guide, who provides eerie commentary about the supernatural and historical mysteries that have plagued the Eternal City for centuries. See attractions like Campo de’ Fiori, Castel Sant’Angelo and Palazzo Farnese in a whole new light.
  • Ghost and mystery walking tour of Rome
  • Explore Italy’s ancient capital under the cover of darkness
  • Discover top attractions such as Castel Sant'Angelo, Palazzo Farnese and Ponte Sisto illuminated at night
  • Wander down winding alleyways with an expert guide and hear terrifying tales of myth and legend
  • Learn of the Corte Savella Prison, where late-Renaissance noblewoman Beatrice Cenci was unfairly put to death in the 16th century
  • Take an alternative nocturnal view of Rome's major sites on this entertaining evening tour
Your evening tour starts at Sant'Andrea della Valle, where you’ll meet your guide in the shadows of the church’s baroque façade. Then begin your exploration into Rome’s thousands of years of ghostly history.

Walk along Corso Vittorio to Campo de’ Fiori, an ancient square that has been a lively part of the city since the 1200s. While you soak up the chilling atmosphere of the square after dark, hear about the supernatural activity that has taken place here over the centuries. Then head across Piazza Farnese, passing by Palazzo Farnese, on your way to Ponte Sisto, a 15th-century bridge. Cross the Tiber River, walking toward the Church of Santa Maria dell’Orazione e Morte, and stop at the site of the ancient Corte Savella prison, where Beatrice Cenci, a noblewoman from the late Renaissance era, was sentenced to death for the murder of her father. Was it fair? Hear about her story and her ghost that still calls for justice.

Continue along Via dei Banchi Vecchi and Via del Banco di Santo Spirito to Castel Sant’Angelo, commissioned by Rome’s Emperor Hadrian in 123 AD as a mausoleum. The imposing structure has had many lives, from fortress to pope’s residence to prison, and as such, is shrouded in legends and mysteries.

Your tour ends here, where you are centrally placed to continue your night out in Rome on your own.
Pass By:
Campo de' Fiori
Between the glory days of the Roman Empire and the beauty of the Italian Renaissance, medieval Rome was a city of desperation and suspicion. Your expert local guide will reintroduce you to monuments you thought you knew, transformed by night-time illuminations, and describe how they were desecrated by citizens desperate for something to sell.
Pass By:
Via Giulia
You’ll also hear about the Inquisition that turned neighbor against neighbor, roasted heretics on spits, and tried to suppress crime by hanging paintings of the Virgin Mary on street corners.
Pass By:
Via del governo Vecchio
Dark times give rise to dark legends, and your guide, an experienced storyteller, will share some of these too.
Pass By:
Piazza Farnese
As you traverse the Tiber river to enjoy some of Rome’s gorgeous piazzas without the heat and crowds of the daytime, you’ll hear the tale of the bridge haunted by a young girl tragically wronged by her family and the Pope.
Pass By:
Museo Nazionale di Castel Sant'Angelo
At the house of Rome’s most notorious murderer, your guide will reveal what made this bloody figure surprisingly empathetic. Whether you’re here for hidden history, love legends and hauntings, or just want to sightsee without the usual crowds, this night tour is sure to reveal another side of Rome.

Scenic & Interesting
, Feb 2020
We decided to go on this tour because it was quick and offered us a different view of the city than the norm. John was a great guide and kept things interesting and engaging as we walked along Rome streets. He also offered us recommendations on where to eat after, which was spot on.
An evening in the shadows

Not so much ghost stories but definitely offbeat with well told tales that will challenge your take on institutions and their history. Interesting facts that you probably won't get on any other tour. John was very animated and told the tales with a real flair.
Would definitely recommend!

This tour was amazing and full of so many historical stories that we wouldn’t have heard about otherwise! The tour was 2 hours total with an average amount of walking. We got to see several buildings/parts of Rome that we hadn’t heard about prior to the tour. The tour guide was animated, knowledgeable, and you could tell really enjoyed what they were discussion. Don’t let the name of the tour discourage you if you aren’t into ghost tours! Though the stories did talk about real people and their ghost that people see, it was full of history as well!! I would definitely recommend taking this tour if you are in Rome!

The tour of dark ages Rome was fabulous. 35 people did not show and so there were only 8 of us. Camilla from Chillie was a fantastic guide. She was knowledgeable and enthusiastic.

We all love ghost stories and tours in new places that have a special twist... otherwise you wouldn't be interested in "Dark Ages of Rome." Well, no disappointment here. Matt, our guide, made our night memorable... knowledgeable, very enthusiastic and really quite alot of fun. Highly recommend this guided tour.
