Your nighttime tour starts at a central meeting point, where you meet your guide and eet off on your leisurely walking tour of Rome’s ancient sites.

Pass through Via dei Fori Imperiali for a beautiful view of the Roman Forum, which is closed at night. As you admire the ruins bathed in evening light, your guide will point out sites like the Sanctuary of the Vestal Virgins, a temple once home to the most honored women in ancient Rome.

Then make your way down the hill, catching sight of Augustus’ and Caesar’s forums, and arrive at the Colosseum, the most iconic of the Eternal City’s ancient landmarks. Head inside with your guide to explore the near-empty amphitheater, where quiet shadows replace the typical daytime crowds, and listen to stories about the bloody gladiator battles that once took place here. You can walk around the reconstructed floor of the arena, little of which remains of the original surface, and look down between gaps to see the underground chambers.

Next, head below ground to explore the chambers themselves, where wild animals were held and gladiators prepared for their fights. This section of the Colosseum is only open to a select number of visitors each day, so enjoy this rare opportunity to see more than most visitors do during the day, let alone at night.

After exiting the Colosseum, your tour ends outside.
Stop At:
Colonna Traiana
Our tour starts with Trajan’s Column where you’ll pass through Via dei Fori Imperiali overlooking the Roman Forum (closed at this hour), the civic historical centre. Home to the bustling marketplace, ruled by moneylenders and shopkeepers, this was Rome at its finest. Here politicians held rallies before elections, soldiers marched triumphantly down the Via Sacra, and the Vestal Virgins decided if men lived or died.

Stop At:
Roman Forum
Even the ancient Romans rarely saw the Colosseum like this: empty, peaceful, and cool. But away from the crowds, and with your guide on hand to fill in any details, it’s easy to imagine the arena as it once was.

Stop At:
As that empire expanded, so did the Colosseum’s repertoire. The Arena Floor filled with combatants, creatures and recreations of tales from far-flung places. Not only will you get to enter the Colosseum after it closes to the public, you’ll enjoy access to restricted areas, including the Arena Floor itself. With the amphitheater lit up like the grand stadium it once was, and without the usual daytime crowd, you’ll have the chance to capture some truly amazing photos. See the Colosseum through the eyes of both gladiators and spectators with a top-to-bottom tour: from the 2nd tier of the audience to the Underground, where gladiators, painted scenery and wild beasts awaited their big entrance.

Worth it!

Excellent guide, amazing information. The tour before the Colosseum was as good as the tour inside. Learned a lot, tour guide was smart and funny and ready for questions. Saw Rome in a whole new way.
One of the highlights

We had visited the Colosseum during the day as well, but this was quite different and a beautiful experience.

Awesome Tour

My friend and I scheduled this outside of the tour offered by our travel agent. I would say we made a fantastic choice. Seeing the Forums and Colosseum at night was amazing and having it be with a smaller group made it very educational and a great experience.
Lots of walking and history

The meet up point for this tour is not very well described. You have to be right at the base of the WEDDING CAKE facing it, turn left and walk across the street towards the column under the tall trees. Took us ages to find it because it was a rainy night. Once we joined the tour, it was very informative. We had a great guide for the early part of the tour up to the colosseum, Emiliano, After we got to the colosseum, we had a archeologist, don't remember his name, but this part of the tour was a bit too technical and boring because the guide was not very engaging, maybe because his english was a little lacking, in italian he might have been a different person. overall we had a great time and recommend it.
Colosseum by night

Fantastic! A history lesson while making your way to the Roman Forum, with some interesting things a long the way, set up the colosseum tour. At night there are no crowds and get access to things you don’t during the day, well worth doing. City Wonders provided a very knowledgeable guide.
Great Tour with a small Hiccup

We started our tour in Piazza Venezia with a wonderful guide, Damiano, who is an archeologist, so was able to give us a great perspective on our walk from the Piazza to the Colosseum, going past the Forum, and other sites along the way. That part of the tour lasted one hour, then was picked up by another guide at the Colosseum. The Colosseum at night is lovely, and the underground and arena floor is a must. The only downside (and a small one) of the night tour is that the view of the ruins from the 2nd level are not really visible at night. Otherwise, it was great. The one small hiccup was our 2nd tour guide. She was very nice and knowledgeable, but we could only understand about 1/3 to 1/2 of what she said, which really detracted from the experience. Everyone was constantly asking each other if they knew what she said. Viator needs to make sure people giving English speaking tours are not just fluent in English, but understandable in English. She spoke very softly with an VERY heavy accent, and was just hard to understand so we probably missed a lot, but just looking at things was awesome.

Overall very good-my 1 complaint is that they did not announce the new meeting place so I almost missed the tour. Otherwise very informative
A must do

we were first in at 8pm and had the whole colosseum to ourselves, it was awesome, so quiet and spectacular lit up as it was. This is the only way to see the Colosseum
