Overview

Travel by bus into the Skaftafell National Park as a guide sheds light on the region’s geology. Pull on your hiking gear and head along rugged trails to the tongue of the Virkisjökull Glacier — widely considered the park’s most impressive feature. Along the way, discover the crevasses, ice caves and waterfalls for which the region is famous and enjoy personal attention from your guide on this small-group tour, limited to 10 people.

Make your way to Glacier Guides booking hut in Skaftafell National Park (next to the Visitor Center). Skaftafell National Park is located just off of the main ring road, on road #998. Skaftafell is approximately 4 hours east of Reykjavik and 1.5 hours west of Höfn. Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your reserved departure time; departures are available at 9:15am, 10am, 11:30am, and 1pm.
From the departure point, take a short ride through the mountains to the tongue of the Falljökull glacier. Listen to a short orientation from your guide and learn how to use the provided glacier gear. With your small group of just 10 people, trek up to the ice fall, passing small ice caves, moulins, and crevasses. Once at the ice fall, take a short break to enjoy the lunch or snack you have packed and learn some more about the environment. Total time on the ice is about three hours.
