Return Details

Returns to original departure point
Leave Quito aboard a comfortable coach or bus. Head south along the Pan-American Highway: driving through spectacular scenery and soaking in views of Ecuador’s countryside from stunning heights.

On the way to Cotopaxi Volcano National Park, stop to sip coca leaf tea to help reduce any altitude sickness, and stop by at the local museum to learn more about the park’s unique biodiversity. Then, visit the Limpiopungo Lagoon. If weather permits, your tour will end with a walk to see Cotopaxi, an active volcano 19,000 feet (5,900 meters) above sea level.

Take the opportunity to visit a local market or two during your travels; and finish with a trip to Quilotoa Volcano, whose crater houses a beautiful turquoise lake. Take in the views here before returning to Quito in the afternoon.

Note: If the day is too foggy and cloudy, guests have the opportunity to repeat the tour at no additional cost.

Nice trip to cotopaxi & quilotoa.

The tour is nice. The cotopaxi volcano is beautiful. The quilotoa trip is too far from the city but nice when you get there. Good food as well.

The tour was really good, specially the guide person. The bus was terrible, chairs damaged and not a great vehicle to be all day!

disappointing tour
Juan Carlos C
, Dec 2019
The Cotopaxi part was completely disappointing. Basically they bring you to the park and do a completely irrelevant walk around an ugly lake about 20km away from the volcano. The Quilotoa part was basic: they bring you to the volcano and give you less than 2 hours time. I had to rush to go down to the lake while the rest of the tour went for lunch. I was the only one in our tour to do that. I would NOT recomment this tour if you care about Cotopaxi (other tours reach with the vehicle 4200m or the refuge at 4800m) or if you do want to do more than taking pictures of Quilotoa (or you're fit enough to do it in 1h 45min). This tour is too basic for either attraction. I understand it's a long shot to do both in one day, but then you should leave earlier and not do 8-10 stops of 10-15 minutes each to take irrelevant pictures (just to fill the schedule), not lose 30min because of missing paperwork entering the park and another 30min of paperwork when leaving the park, return a bit later, etc.

Dear Juan Carlos, Thank you for your comment, your feedback is very important for us! We understand that there are people who may have the physical abilities and want to try to reach the refuge, however the altitude sickness can affect anyone (regardless of their physical condition). From our experience, most passengers haven't spent enough time in the altitude before taking this tour so they aren’t prepared to hike up to 4,800 meters, and we obviously can't control this. Doing this would put some of our passengers at risk and that's why it’s not part of this tour. Something similar happens with the Quilotoa excursion where we indeed spend 2 hours approximately. This is usually enough time for people who feel confident about hiking and want to go down to the lagoon and climb back up on a donkey. Hiking back up from the Lagoon to the edge of the crater can be quite challenging if you are not used to the altitude and that's why we don't recommend this (or give time to do so). Unfortunately, this is not a hiking tour and that may be why your appreciation of it is not completely positive. We also feel sorry that you didn't like the Limpiopungo lagoon, but we go there because it is one of the most important water reserves in the area and its flora and fauna around it are of vital importance for the conservation of the Cotopaxi National Park. We regret if there was a delay in entering and leaving Cotopaxi National Park due to paperwork. However, please know that this is not something that is under our control. It is mandatory requirement by the national government for all protected parks and I'm sure it would be the case no matter what tour you would have taken. We appreciate your comment and we will review the other stops that were made during the tour, to verify if they indeed provide any value. It’s worth mentioning that in one of the first stops before Cotopaxi, many passengers take the opportunity to drink coca-leaf tea which helps with altitude sickness also. We hope that you can try our services in the future again!

Our visit to Cotopaxi National Park and the Quilotoa creator lake was a wonderful introduction to the natural wonders and culture of Ecuador. Roberto, our guide, was knowledgeable and informative, friendly and upbeat. It was along day on the bus, but Robertos running commentaries gave us many insights into the environments that we encountered, as well as insights into the indigenous communities of the Central highlands. We would highly recommend this trip to others.

This tour is a long bus ride 8-9 hours and only about 3-4 hours of actual sightseeing. There's a late lunch and at Quilotoa Volcano it was foggy, so that not much can be seen. It's a long day.

A great day with a very fun and informed guide, Ivan from Gray Line. The tour to Cotopaxi was breathtaking, Clouds disappearing from Cotopaxi Volcano, the walk out to the marshland, a lunch, visiting the Canon Del Rio and The Laguna Verde Quilotoa. Full of information I returned to my Hotel with an overload of information. A wonderful day with a great guide. A day not to be missed. Thank you Ivan!

We saw both Cotopaxi and Quilotoa, and we even saw a condor flying above. We got a good feel for the countryside including vertical farming and rural life. The guide was professional and had so much information to share! It was a fun day, and I learned a lot.
