Make your own way into central Prague to meet your guide. Then, travel by air-conditioned coach to Karlstejn Castle, situated above the village of Karlstejn.

As you travel, admire the Czech countryside and hear the history of the castle, a hilltop Gothic fortress founded by Holy Roman Emperor elect, Charles IV, in 1348.

After roughly an hour, arrive and ogle the views of the storybook castle, whose turrets and towers drape a hillside surrounded by lush forests. Then, either walk or ride a horse-drawn carriage (own expense) up to the gate.

Head inside for a guided tour of the buildings as you learn how Charles IV used the castle as a treasury for his coronation jewels.

See the Burgrave’s Palace and Well Tower as your guide shares the latter’s gruesome secret and continue to the five-storey Imperial Palace and its nearby towers.

Step inside to view the Chapel of the Holy Cross, home to 129 exquisite panel paintings by Charles’ court painter, Master Theodoric; and learn how the imperial regalia were kept safely here.

See a replica of St Wenceslas’ crown, and visit the Knight’s Hall, with its central late-Gothic altarpiece. Then, explore highlights such as the Chapel of St Catherine, a place of private meditation for Charles; and the Great Tower, whose walls are hung with paintings of Karlstejn and other castles.

Behold the spectacular views from the towers, and then descend back to Karlstejn village to finish your tour back in Prague.

Please note: If Karlstejn Castle is closed, the tour will visit Český Šternberk. Built in the 13th century, this fairy tale-like fortress perches above the Sázava River and town of Český Šternberk, and is famed for its rich stucco and weaponry collections.

rescos, paintings and other treasures, including a replica crown, before your return to Prague.

Karlstejn Castle
Make your own way into central Prague to meet your guide. Then, travel by bus to Karlstejn Castle, situated above the village of Karlstejn. Karlstejn Castle was built in the 14th century by the Czech king and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV. In the Castle Treasury, you can admire a copy of the St. Wenceslas Crown, the medieval crown of the kings of Bohemia). Overall great trip and guide. My only "complaint" is that we weren't able to see the medieval family chapel, as it is only available to small(er) private tours. It looks like an amazing part of the castle, and it was irritating that we couldn't see it while we were there. I understand the reasons why the castle staff don't want huge numbers traipsing through the chapel. But my request is that Viator offer this as a private, or smaller tour, so that one has the option/opportunity to see such a special part of the site.

5 stars for driver/guide - Our driver / guide was GREAT. He was very knowledgeable of history, and could converse in English very well. 2 stars for castle guide - My only concern was with the castle guide. In the first room there is a map of the Holy Roman Empire with the shields of the kingdoms within the empire. Above each shield is the name of the kingdom except for two shields, which have no title above them. The guide didn't know why the shield had no name. Each room is locked. When you go from one room to another, the guide unlocks the door, then locks it after everyone is in the new room. The flashing of the lock sometimes has a crown, sometimes it doesn't. I realized the doors leading into the king's room have a crown, the doors leading to common rooms do not have the crown. The guide had no idea of this. This was my first time at castle. This was her many times through castle. She should have known

The trip was good. The guide was very nice and informative, very interested in getting to know everyone and able to explain everything in multiple languages. The bus driver was equally helpful and friendly and allowed my friends and I to stow our luggage on the bus for the duration of the trip, which was very nice. Keep in mind, however, these buses are small most are converted Mercedes Sprinter vans and people carriers, so don't come with more than a backpack and expect them to have room for it. The Karlstejn Castle was okay, but nothing to write home about. The castle is mostly barren and you only get to see one of the two towers, so almost half the castle is off-limits. While we were inside, we were quite hurried along by the local guide and we were always with another group in the same room, meaning that both guides were speaking at the same time and it was hard to hear and make out what they were saying. Overall not very impressed by the castle visit itself. If you are booking this tour, please keep in mind that the castle is on a mountain and you will have to climb a bit of a slope to get to it. This climb is not as exerting as other castle climbs in the region, but if you have trouble walking for long distances or tire very easily, you may want to choose something else. I would recommend Viator or the local providers for the great service, but I would not recommend this castle visit. If you're looking for a good day trip from Prague, might want to look at other tours from Viator.

Loved seeing the countryside. That the guide was more interested in talking with the bus driver than giving us info on way there and back was not the best. The castle was worth seeing.
