Meet your friendly and professional driver and guide at your hotel or cruise port and embark on this Peang Hill and Kek Lok Si Buddhist Temple afternoon tour, where you’ll learn about the history, traditions and practices of this incredible land.

Head off to Georgetown Station where you’ll experience the thrill of riding the Penang Hill Railway. This funicular train climbs to the nation’s oldest hill station and offers incredible views along the way. Keep your eyes peeled for monkeys, birds and other wildlife on the 20-minute ride.

Once you’ve taken in the epic panoramic views from atop Penang Hill—some 2,695 feet (821 meters) about the city—continue your adventure to Kek Lok Si. Known as the Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas, this impressive destination ranks tops among Southeast Asia’s most iconic temples. Stationed near Penang Hill and carved into the side of Air Itam, the seven-tiered architectural masterpiece showcases features from Thai, Chinese and Burmese cultures.

Follow your guide through the temple complex, where you’ll see the bronze statue of the Goddess of Mercy standing some 99 feet (30 meters) tall and the Pond of Longevity, where hundreds of turtles live. Your guide will explain how these hard-shelled amphibians represent strength and endurance in local culture.

Your tour concludes with a return trip to your hotel or cruise port in air-conditioned comfort.
Itinerary
Stop At:
Penang Hills
Penang Hill is the oldest British hill station in Southeast Asia, dated late 1700's. Ride the steep funicular railway up Penang Hill. Enjoy panoramic views across the island and explore the historic British hill station, dating back to the 18th century.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At:
Kek Lok Si Temple
Staggered on hillside terraces overlooking Air Itam, Malaysia's largest Buddhist temple is a visual delight. Built between 1890 and 1905, Kek Lok Si is the cornerstone of the Malay-Chinese community, which provided the funding for its two-decade-long construction (and ongoing additions). Its key features are the seven-tier Thousand-Buddha Pagoda and an awesome 36.5 meters-high bronze statue of Goddess of Mercy. To reach the temple's main entrance, you'll have to run the gauntlet of souvenir stalls on the uphill path. You'll also pass a pond packed with turtles. There are a lot of stairs involved, but the final stretch up to the statute of Goddess of Mercy is covered by a funicular.

A very informative & beautiful trip

Traveled with my cousin who was visiting from Melbourne. It was her first trip to Penang (Hill). Although having myself been to Penang Hill before, this trip was was made interesting by our guide. The information provided gave me a new perspective about the place. The visit to Kek Lok Si temple was simple magnificent. We both found it extremely beautiful, not just from the architecture of the temple but from the stories and information provided by our guide. He was very knowledgeble about the places he took us to and also most of the sites we passed on the way to Penang Hill and the temple. He even suggested a place to eat which was simply good. Overall, it was a very informative and interesting trip. We both loved it. The views were just amazing!

The Penang Hill portion of this tour...

The Penang Hill portion of this tour was really superb. Got a change to take the funicular, which is a spectacular climb, and wander around the hilltop by electric cart. Our guide knew how to maneuver us into the right part of the car, so we could get some good photos on the way up. He also showed us around the hotel up there, which is neat and made us wish we'd booked a night's stay. The temperature on the hilltop was nice as well--it was great to be cool for a change! The Kek Lok Si portion could use some work. Much of the temple is under construction, and there were many places at the top where we were not permitted to go. The turtle pond was nice, but our time at the temple was short and it kind of felt like an add-on. Our guide told us that the lights at night were spectacular perhaps that should be part of the tour? Our guide was pleasant, informative, and spoke excellent English, He finished up the tour by driving us through the historic district on the way back to our hotel, and provided an informative running commentary about the various buildings we saw. All in all, a good day and worth the money. Thanks!

Guide was excellent. Schedule worked well. The sites on this trip were extraordinary. On the hill, I even had some extra time to take tea and scones at the restaurant built into a beautiful British colonial building.

Excellent tour, just my husband and I, was picked up by our lovely guide from our cruise terminal and had a one to one tour of the city and the temple. On the penang hill railway he even made sure we had the best view as we traveled up the hill, would highly recommend afternoon tea in the gardens of the old colonial tea rooms.

This presentation was only slightly better than a high school play. Whatever the ad says about this do not expect food nor pickup from hotel.
