Meet your knowledgeable guide inside the Opera Garnier for this tour of the famous building. It's one of Europe's largest opera houses, with seating for almost 2,000 people, and the premier opera house in Paris. Designed by Charles Garnier in the late 1800s, it was officially called the Palais Garnier to reflect its opulence and grandeur.

Visit the Member's Rotunda, with its inlaid mosaic floor and elegant lighting, which once served as the reception area for VIP opera-goers. Take in the incredible main staircase (Grand Escalier), with Greek gods and goddesses depicted in bronze on either side. Learn about the opera house's history, including beloved operas that have been performed on its stage and how this iconic theater inspired the setting for the novel by Gaston Leroux (and, later, musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber), 'The Phantom of the Opera.'

Walk into the enormous auditorium to be enveloped by the red velvet upholstery and golden décor. Everything is opulent and over-the-top, and perfectly theatrical. Don't miss the huge chandelier at the center of the auditorium.

See the Grand Foyer and the lounges where theater-goers can chat and get a drink during intermissions, and where you'll see yet more decorative mosaics, mirrors and paintings. These areas were designed to look like a typical French chateau. Tours typically end here, from which point you can continue to explore on your own.

Choose to upgrade your experience with an after-hours tour to see all the sights of this impressive theater without the usual daytime crowds. You'll visit all the same sights listed above, but your group will have the space all to itself.

Palais Garnier
In 1860, a contest was launched for the construction of a new opera house in Paris. It was young architect Charles Garnier's project that was unanimously adopted for its exuberant mix of ostentatious and eclectic baroque architecture. 73 sculptors and 14 painters worked on it until its inauguration in January 1875. Measuring 172m in length and 124m in breadth, the Opera Garnier is the largest opera house in Europe, with the capacity to welcome more than 2000 people.

Looked pretty from the outside. Didn’t attend because wrong day was booked and unable to get refund.
Rough start- great tour!

The pick up location for the required paper tickets was really a disaster. The wrong address was listed on my purchase receipt and caused unnecessary stress. I finally just went into the Opera House to ask what to do - and that's where I actually needed to go. Why not just provide digital tickets and send us to the Opera House? The tour actually was GREAT!! What a magnificent, beautiful building. I took my two grandchildren, age 7 and 11. We studied the activity guide provided online before going, and the kids were prepared for the visit. Tatiana clearly engaged with them and made it special. We were able to hang around after the tour ended and watch workers set the stage for the next production. The kids were enthralled! We all loved the tour experience.

Less than ideal

The instructions that we received for the departure point were seriously less than helpful.njmber 8 does not appear on the opera building until near the back. You really need to go to the entrance down and to the left of the main front entrance. The whisper machines were terrible. It had a lot of static and picked up someone speaking french frequently blocking out the English information. Less than impressive.

This place is beautiful better than Versailles. The art decor and architecture are well preserve. this is a must visit place

Most beautiful building in Paris. Would have liked to hear more about the conductors, singers and orchestras. Focus was on audience and their fashions.

The Garnier Opera house is certainly worth visiting. We had an excellent guide. She was very knowledgeable and her English was quite good. The Chagall-painted ceiling is worth the price of admission. I highly recommend this tour.
