A great experience

I loved seeing all of the monkey climb on the boat to eat. We were able to feed many of them. We were able to see 3 different species of monkeys, crocodile and bats. Our tour guide made the trip even better because of his knowledge, personality and flexibility ❤️

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Gonzo. He was on time to pick us up for the tour. He was extremely knowledgeable about the history of Panama and gave us insight as to how that history impacts this beautiful country and it’s residents today. Gonzo expressed such a deep love and respect for Panama that it is easy to see why so many people call this country home. This was demonstrated in his interactions with everyone that we met ( our boat captain, the residents of the Wounaan villlage, the small business owner of the traditional food shop where we stopped for lunch as well as people with whom we met along the tour). We had the opportunity to see three types of monkeys, a variety of birds, turtles and a crocodile! We also learned a great deal about plants and their medicinal use in the village. This tour was informative, well paced and enjoyable. Having Gonzo as a tour guide was a definite plus! His extensive knowledge and experience is remarkable.

Amazing tour guide and company!

This was by far one of our favorite experiences while in Panama! Our tour guide, Gonzo, was incredible and by far one of the best tour guides I have had while traveling. He is extremely knowledgeable about the history and culture of Panama. He is very easy going and worked to tailor our trip to fit our interest. He was prompt, friendly and an overall great guide that taught us a lot about Panama. By the end of the experience he was more of a friend than a tour guide and that is something that we really appreciated. In fact, we ended up booking another experience with Barefoot Panama (on their website) and had Gonzo as our guide again, it was like traveling with a friend and we had a great time! He even gave us a bunch of recommendations for things to do while we were in the city which we checked out and were very impressed. Barefoot Panama is a great company and we'll definitely book more excursions with them when we come back to Panama! As for the experience itself it was amazing and I highly recommend it! Feeding the monkeys and riding around the Panama Canal was a lot of fun and we were able to get close to the monkeys in their natural habitat without disturbing them. Definitely one of the best wildlife experiences we have had in a while. Our time visiting the native tribe was fascinating. Gonzo has profound knowledge on the tribe and even taught us some words in their native language to help us connect with them. We were even able to speak with some villagers as we were buying things from them and they were very kind and grateful for the transactions. We had a small nature walk which was beautiful and learned about the biodiversity of Panama. Overall an incredible experience and I highly recommend to anyone looking for an inside look at Panamanian culture! There are a number of reviews complaining about not being able to dance, sing, cook etc., with the natives which is honestly baffling and somewhat insulting to the tribe as they are not there for our entertainment. When booking this experience you must understand that we are their guest and that they are friendly enough to allow us into their space. Cultural competence is important and Barefoot Panama understands that we must be respectful of the indigenous people while we are on their land. Frankly, if you are looking for a show when visiting native people whether in Panama or anywhere else in the world you are better off not traveling. We were happy to visit the village and buy stuff from the villagers since we knew that our money would go a long way for them, especially given the impact the pandemic has had on them. It is important to understand your privilege as a traveler and know that the money spent here is directly helping the community rather than a big corporation. Furthermore, there was never a point in time that we felt "pressured" to buy things from them any review that says otherwise is lying. Before booking please understand that you will be going on excursion with a tour company that values cultural competence and appreciation rather than one that is exploiting native people for capitalistic gains.

Expected more from village tour

I have mixed feelings about this tour. On the one hand, the tour guide was EXCELLENT. One of the best I have had in awhile. Extremely knowledgeable about Panama's history, the monkeys, and the village (which was not Embera as I thought it would be, but a neighboring tribe). The monkey tour by itself is amazing. 5 stars. The reason that I rate this as less than 5 stars is because of the village tour. We walked through a village, and learned about the rainforest plants and the village culture through our very informative guide but I was expecting more of an interaction with the villagers. You see in other tours being able to meet the elders, to dance, to even try the food. I feel that this tour was no different from going to a museum. I did not really SEE the village culture. The only villagers we met were the women who were selling jewelry and they did not interact with us besides tell us the prices for things. That was disappointing. For the money, I expected way more.

Why do people relocate? Better life. So, instead of fishing in a river during the rainy season the Embera and Wounaan people left the Darien provice and headed toward the Panama/Colon povinces.. for a better life. Now they are a bit mixed, like every single person in the Americas.. so they consider themselves Wounaan but they have Embera in their bloodline... no one could tell the difference, unless we/they tell you. And because it is a real village, they are not dancing and putting on a show for cruise ship passengers, like some people expect.. BUT please find comfort in the fact that your $ goes to real native people (health, education) and not a giant tour company exploiting indiginous people. Thank you

Our tour guide was beyond excellent! (I just wish I remembered his name.) He took his time calling the monkeys down and explained so much about the monkeys and the embera culture. The man deserves a raise!

I dont see nor have ever mentioned water is provided.. since you can drink the water in Panama, we recommend refilling your bottles to be less wasteful and more environmentally conscious. . but thanks for the review all the same

A very nice tour with an excellent guide and driver. One suggestion I have is to make the landing dock at the Indian village safe and secure. Otherwise, a very nice tour.

This trip is a totall ripoff and wasting time and money. No breakfast nor lunch included compared to other full-day trips with the same price. Just a few monkey pictures and boring native village visit do not worth $150.00 .
