Overview

Enjoy an evening of stargazing in the California desert on this guided small-group tour from Palm Desert. Explore a private, 800-acre preserve on the San Andreas Fault and learn about the desert’s plants, animals, history, geology and earthquakes in an open-air Jeep. Then examine the dark, starry sky with a hand-held tracking device. Granola snacks, bottled water, and a pickup and drop-off from select Palm Desert hotels are included.

This stargazing adventure begins with a hotel pickup in Palm Desert, followed by an open-air Jeep ride into the desert. 

Travel to a private preserve on the San Andreas Fault to visit a natural palm oasis. Explore the stunning canyons and visit an ancient fossil bed as the Jeep winds through the labyrinth of geological cuts and canyons along the San Andreas Fault Zone.

Learn about the desert’s plants, animals, history, geology and earthquakes and find out why the Cahuilla people lived on the San Andreas Fault. Hear some of the fascinating stories of the valley's pioneer settlers and gold miners.  

Watch the sun dip below the horizon, casting beautiful colors and shadows all over the Palm Desert. Then, just as the stars come out, discover the mysteries of the night sky with a high powered telescope, laser pointer, and tutorial. The guide will point out the visible planets and stars and share the stories and mythology of the constellations.

The tour ends with a return trip to Palm Desert and a hotel drop-off.

- Experience the twisted and tortured landscape of an active earthquake fault system as your guide describes the geology of the area and you explore the skeleton of the earth. - Walk between the steep walls of deep canyons created by the powerful forces of plate tectonics, water, wind, and time. - Explore a natural palm oasis where crystal clear water bubbles up from the underground aquifer. - Learn about the culture and lifestyle of the Cahuilla Indians and how they used the desert’s plants for food, medicine, tools, weapons, shelter, and more. - Learn about the plants and animals of the California desert. - Discover the fascinating history of the Coachella Valley. - Enjoy spectacular views as your guide describes the geologic forces and local history that shaped the Coachella Valley. - Witness the amazing colors of a desert sunset. - The tour ends with stargazing under the clear desert skies.

  • Confirmation will be received within 48 hours of booking, subject to availability
  • A minimum of 2 guests per booking is required
  • Closed-toe shoes, a hat and sunscreen are strongly advised
  • As desert temperatures may vary, dressing in layers would be advised
  • Please call the reservation's desk a day or two before your tour to confirm your pickup time and location. Failure to call, however, will NOT result in cancellation of the tour.
  • The departure time of this tour varies with sunset. Tours depart approximately 1.5 hours before sunset.

We had a great jeep tour as well as a wonderful talk about the galaxy. Clouds prevented us from viewing planets and stars but still very interesting. And John P was an excellent guide.

The gentlemen that give these tour guides live the lifestyle. They are hiking and living with nature during their leisure time. Very knowledgeable and willing to share the history and plant life of the desert. Not to mention, astronomy and scientific advancements. Our tour guide was Mike was charming, sincere, and was very adept to his environment. He was very calming and made us feel safe. Mitch was our star gazer.
