The fiji trekking and sightseeing tours...
Brian H

The fiji trekking and sightseeing tours tour by Viator is a total waste of money and time! The round trip from Nadi is five hours in an un air conditioned car. The car did have it just didnt cool the car. They gave me the honored position of the back seat so his wife could be in the comfortable seat on the way there. With the windows down and all the road noise I couldnt even ask questions. During the 2.5 hours drive there they had to stop and get gas, shouldnt that been done ahead of the tour? The trekking location appeared to be at their house. The walk around the house was more like a sales pitch for his hostel. At this point I was transferred to another guy to do the trekking. Started walking though what appeared to be a prior plowed pasture which was overgrown. Oh it gets worse you get to pass though thorn bushes and sand burrs on a steep embankment with a lot of loose leaves. Oh what wonderful scratches I get to mend. The walk to one of the two sites which down into a hole to drop into is so steep I couldnt do it as I am scared of heights. I ask if there was a different entrance which there was but not much different then the last. During the walk the guide said I was going to be to big for the hole even though he wasnt that much smaller. The insults continued until I was feed up with the tour. On top of all that they gave me a bunch of excuses why it was so bad and even tried to make me feel like it was my fault they had a cyclone come though and destroy thier forest. I could not see any sign of a cyclone it must have only hit their property. They then proceeded to say if you walk 1.5km there is a forest with and underground stream, you can only hear it. Probably would have been dried up just like this company. I asked to cancel the trip and be returned to the hotel so I cant comment on the lunch but would have to assume it was also bad or the market. I probably should have done the market just to possible have something good to say about this company!

We booked this tour to find an interesting way to spend a 15-hour layover in Fiji. The tour guide, who seemed nice, had to step in for his father who had some emergency and could not lead the tour. We visited the market drove around and saw all the expensive new hotels in Fiji saw the Hindu temple grabbed lunch at an local amusement fair and rode up into the hills for a short hike. The lunch was okay but I am usually not that eager to eat street food though it didn't cause any stomach problems this time. I was disappointed that we did not go to Ba or even some place similar. The guide said there was some problem with the road or the bridge but he also did not seem very knowledgeable about the natural features of this island. He had to solicit help of a friend to find a place for us to take even a short walk. The two of them just stood back and watched us take a short walk. It does seem there was an overall lack of planning. For example, it would have been better if they could think of a good alternate for Ba and knew in advance where to go trekking. I think we would have gotten more out of just hiring a taxi at the airport to drive us around Fiji, Though the guide seemed to be trying hard to please us, the tour really did not match with the description. I was actually expecting to do trekking but there was really none of that. I did emphasize to them that we needed to get out and walk since we had been on a very long plane ride. Given that we visited Fiji in their winter season, the landscape was definitely not lush or even all that interesting in the places where we went. The guide did pick us up as expected at the airport but I made 2 Skype phone calls from the US to confirm time and place. The agency does not respond to email. Overall, I would say this tour is overpriced and does not really deliver what seems to be promised in the tour description.

We would not recommend this trip...
We were picked up in a hire car by 2 Fijian guys. They didn't introduce themselves or let us know we were the only 2 on the trip. We thought we were being collected to join the main group. The 2 guys were not normally tour operators, the driver and organiser was a 24 year old former hotel manager, the other was a mechanic who got a call an hour before as he was the main English speaker. The organiser didn't seem to know Ba at all as he needed directions to the market and where to park the car. The guys were pretty nice up to this point, they stopped and got us local sweets and took us around the markets. We did need to go with them to order and get the lunches, taking a walk around a local supermarket to pass a few mins!!
On leaving Ba, the guys asked us where we were told we were going, I couldn't remember the town name so I told them we didn't know, they almost laughed at this! We were then asked what pictures we had seen of the location. I started feeling a little uneasy at this point.
After 35 mins on a rough gravel road, in a car, we turned off the road into a small track, unsuitable for a car. We traveled along here for a few km. At this point, I had checked where we were due to go and realised we were on a different road. We arrived at an unused shack where the guys told us we were due to go. When we got out, they asked us if we wanted to go for a walk towards the valley. This seemed like more of a hassle than an encouragement. The 2 guys were in sandals and at one point, one of them complained about the incorrect footwear! While we were walking, I told one of the guys the ad mentioned Navala, they said that was very far but didn't seem to know if that was part of the tour or not.
No rock climbing was offered, the only local farm we visited was when we walked through the mountain land, and there was no tropical forest. The river was dry, which was fine, the main guy told us the last time he was there was 2 months ago and the water was up to his chest. He had earlier told us he did this tour every day!!
The trek in total was approx 500m each way.
The lunch was an onion omelette sandwich, sitting on the veranda of the unused shack, we were not asked if we ate or didn't eat anything! The only drink was a bottle of water each.
On the way back, we stopped at the First Landing Resort, this was pointless and just passing time. We then asked to go back to our resort.
Overall, a disappointing, expensive day that we would not recommend

Really great tour! I was a bit apprehensive at first about being the only person booked on this tour, but I neednt have worried as I soon felt part of the family. The whole day felt like a family day out with myself as their guest and proved a more personal and much more real experience than other tours I have done in Fiji. The idyllic scenery throughout the day just got better and better as the tour climbed into the hills. After the tour the family were even kind enough to invite me for dinner at their home in Nadi which was an unforgettable experience I even helped a little bit! rounding off a fantastic day. Really good family run company that I would recommend to anyone wanting a break from the crowds of tourists and wanting to see what inland Fiji has to offer.
