Departure Time

8:10 AM
Discover why the Dandenong Ranges are a favorite destination for day-tripping Melbournians on this fun-filled, full-day tour. After morning pickup at your Melbourne hotel or Federation Square, relax on the ride to the Dandenong Ranges. Stop at the Grants Reserve café for a traditional Australian tea, and then try your hand at feeding some of the area’s native cockatoos and brilliant crimson rosellas while surrounded by verdant ash gum trees.

Continue on to the town of Belgrave and hop aboard Puffing Billy — the oldest steam train in Australia. Settle in to one of the wonderfully preserved railcars and watch the mountain scenery glide by on a ride that takes you through the lush Sherbrooke Forest and across a historic wooden trestle bridge.

Next, head to the famous Healesville Sanctuary, home to more than 200 species of native Australian wildlife. Enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch from one of the on-site cafés (own expense), and then set off to explore the zoo’s beautifully landscaped habitats. Get an up-close encounter with amazing marsupials like kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, Tasmanian devils and koalas, and observe other animals like echidnas, platypuses, lyrebirds and dingoes. Attend various feedings and presentations throughout the day to learn more about these incredible creatures.

Sit back and relax on the return drive to Melbourne, where you’ll be dropped off back at your original departure point in the late afternoon.

Amazing views & very UNIQUE experience

The train is a beautiful train - that takes you through the suburbs. You are greeted by a slew of people at different vantage points taking pictures of the train & waving to the occupants. Many from homes you pass seem to make it out to ensure you are given a very hearty hello/wave.

The Good and The Bad

The Puffing Billy Steam Train Experience was fantastic, it took me back to my childhood and journeying on the narrow guage railway in North Wales [The Bleaneau Festiniog ] Railway. The visit to the Healsville Wildlife Sanctuary started off well. however, the place was hit by a thunder storm and everything closed down, the walkways were awash with water, most of the group were soaked to the skin, with very little cover - only the Gift Shop remained open. We had to wait from 2.30 until 3.45pm before we were picked up again

Fun short train ride up an old logging trail and nice zoo experience with opportunity to see Australian animals in one place. Possibility of touching a wallaby but not an interactive experience. Good feel for Melbourne suburbs.
