Kayaking and snorkeling in South Maui

Relatively easy to find the starting point. Equipment (kayaks and snorkeling gear) was well maintained. With our mixed group (ages 15-75), the pace was leisurely with frequent stops for the tour guide to review Hawaiian history, culture, and prospects. Despite the tour name, we saw no sea turtles but moderate numbers of diverse fish in singles and small schools among the coral reefs. The physical challenges were limited to getting in and out of the kayak without flipping it.

Makena Bay is affectionately nicknamed "Turtle Town" with a very high concentration of Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles (AKA Honu). While not seeing any turtles is very rare, it does occasionally happen... Mother Nature. Glad you have the opportunity to see some corals and reef inhabitants.

Turtles galore!

Overall would recommend this experience. Beautiful scenery and knowledgeable guide. We saw four turtles up close during snorkel session! My only critique is the kayak launching point at the park is pretty congested as it is a public beach as well. Lots of traffic and pedestrians to be mindful of.

Jake was awesome!! He was cool and gave us some facts about the island. He took us to a spot where we got to see a bunch of turtles. At one point, my daughter and I had about 5 turtles around us. It was an awesome experience!

Nice to learn about the area. The snorkeling was fair. Guide was humorous but not particularly helpful. Would not recommend for younger children since there is no beach. Just have to sit in kayak when done snorkeling. Lots of other Kayak tours in the same area so felt crowded.

Aloha Kristi, Makena Bay is a very beautiful area and yes, it can get crowded just as resort pool does. It's a great area for kayaking as its pretty protected and offers great sea life viewing and lots and lots of turtles. The ocean is somewhat warmer than normal and some folks will take advantage of this and stay out snorkeling a little longer.

AMAZINGLY GREAT EXPERIENCE

My husband, along with our son and wife enjoyed a beautiful kayaking and snorkeling trip with an amazing guide, John Hess. His knowledge of the island was great. Great personality with a sense of humor to match. When we book again, we will only do it with John. I don’t swim, but John made me feel totally safe. His knowledge of the coral and sea life was great also. We were very fortunate as he knew right where to go for the best experience. We saw sea turtles and the turtle “car wash!” Book your trip and ask for John.
