Make your way to the Lucerne train station. The station overlooks the pier, so start by boarding your boat for your cruise around Lake Lucerne.

Disembark at Alpnachstad, and head inside a welcoming chalet-style restaurant with a terrace. Use your time here to eat and drink at your own expense, then make your way to the cogwheel railway for a ride up the mountainside.

The steep line is known as a scenic route; cast your gaze out of the window as you pass alongside mountain streams and pastures sprinkled with alpine flowers on your way to the peak of Mt. Pilatus.

When you reach its 6,995-foot (2,132-meter) summit, you have some free time to soak up the views from the gallery, terrace, or restaurant. If you’re feeling more energetic, then take a short stroll to a nearby peak.

Descend back down the mountain via the Dragon Ride cable car, and hop out at Fräkmüntegg to enjoy a range of mountain activities. Test your agility climbing our rope park and get your adrenaline pumping (own expense), or treat the kids to a panoramic cable car ride to the children’s playground at Krienseregg.

From Krienseregg, continue by gondola to Kriens, then take the public bus No.1 from Zentrum Pilatus to the Lucerne train station.

Please note: The order of this tour is flexible, and can be adapted if you wish. See the Itinerary for another suggested timetable.

Golden Round Trip

The actual trip was awesome. The boat cruise, cog wheel train and cable car were all unbelievable. The only hiccup was getting an email from Viator at 4:30 PM the day before, telling us we could not pick up our tickets at the ferry dock and that we had a 3 mile walk or bus ride to pick them up. This was WRONG. The paper work provided by Viator on line was all we needed.

Excellent all around.

This company might want to clarify some of the instructions for taking this tour. The starting time was off as well as what was needed to begin the tour.

Great self-paced tour, redemption point too far away

This tour is amazing and you can go at your own pace, stopping and spending time where you please. Breathtaking views, fun activities, food, etc. All exceptional. The redemption point for the ticket however, is a 15 minute drive from where the tour departs (or a 55 minute walk). We came in the night before and were unable to get there before we were supposed to depart. It would be nice if there was a more central location in Lucerne to redeem the voucher or at an office that stays open past 5. The tour operators were good about letting us go anyway, but it would have been nice to just take care of it ourselves.

Trip itself was great getting tickets with voucher was tough. We were staying in Lucerne but had to bring our voucher out to Mt.Pilatus the day before to leave from Lucerne the next day. Bus ride out to get tickets 3/4 hour each way. Why couldn't tickets have been printed out instead of voucher? TRIP ITSELF THE NEXT DAY WAS GREAT. Getting tickets them self a pain.

I did the tour in reverse, which means I started with the bus trip to Kriens, then obtained my ticket at the gondola. I did not have to wait at all to start my trip. This is the only way to go!!! When I came down the cogwheel train, there was a massive line waiting to get on. The views at the top are amazing. There were several different musical things going on which were very enjoyable. Note that the walk from the bus up to the gondola is slightly uphill and can be strenuous, but so worth it.

Amazing attraction really enjoyed this and has been highlight of our trip. Even with limited mobility I still managed to get up the sloping path to cable car. Very busy day so if attending on the weekend expect ques with locals and tourists going up the mountain. Worth the wait though.

Perfect clear day

Our ticket did say 8.30 start, but upon arrival we were adv it should have said 9.30. The boat trip was great, the ride up the mountain was 'over the top'. Great to see snow at the top of the Mt. It was such a clear day, you really could see forever. Had lunch there, then proceeded back down the Mt. the Gondola & Cable car rides were just great. Glad there were signs to the bus, up that was OK. Recommend definitely go the boat way first.

Weather didn't cooperate.

Our schedule didn't allow us to take this trip on another date. The day was cool and rainy and the trip up provided no view of the surrounding landscape. At the top we waited out the weather and were rewarded with a 30 minute window of nearly clear skies which allowed us to take the hike to Tomlishhorn (well worth the effort).

Fantastic Swiss day

We really enjoyed this tour. Stressful part though was it really wasn’t clear how to exchange our tickets or if we could start later than 8:30am. So for peace of mind, you can definitely get on the boat with your printer paper pass and then you exchange it at the bottom of Pilatus before the cogwheel train. On your way down definitely stop for lunch when you get off the gondola and if you have time try the slide as it was so much fun and really affordable. When you get to the bottom exit the station and follow the clearly marked signs for Luzern bus 1. They guide you to the centre so you can board the bus. From what we could gather you can also start this tour later and go at your own pace.
