Boutique experience as compared to big box cruise ship excursion!

Our guide was amazing, I forget her name but she was knowledgable, attentive and personable. She responded with our requests for slight changes to the itinerary and was so flexible. She and the driver went out of their way to be sure we saw all the wildlife we could possibly see and have unique experiences. I would highly recommend this tour, we beat the lines and crowds and had such personalized service as compared to what would be offered on a typical cruise ship tour booked through the cruiseline. The pick up was very clear and easy and the bus was comfortable

When I read reviews for Relax Day Tours before booking, I thought there was no way they could live up to their reviews. But yet after taking this tour, I can say they absolutely did. Let's start with the transportation--a 15-person mini-bus that they did not pack to capacity. With 8 on our tour, along with the guide and driver, it was comfortable transportation throughout the day. As soon as we walked out the pier gate, our guide Yorlene Hamilton was waiting for us with a sign with our names on it. She accompanied us to the mini-bus and away we went. The first stop was an overlook along a street in Puerto Limon. The town is not very picturesque, but it was nice to see it from above. Then it was a short drive to the Tortuguero Canal. Our boat was waiting when we arrived and the folks on our mini-bus had a boat to ourselves. Yorlene and our driver joined us on the boat, which was great as they were both experts at spotting the wildlife. During our ride, we saw numerous birds and several sloths. The best part was seeing a sloth in a tree just 15 ft. above us eating--so unusual to see a sloth awake and moving. As we rode on the canals, I appreciated that we were not on a cruise ship excursion--there were several boats in the water that held 30-40 people--not nearly as intimate as we had it. Following the canal, we headed to a local fruit stand. I kind of rolled by eyes at this stop, but it actually turned out to be really great. We were treated to a free contain of fresh cut fruit, including pineapple, cantaloupe, and watermelon. Delish! The gift shop attached was quite nice as well. And Yorlene explained the types of trees next to the fruit stand and how they are used by the natives. Next stop was a banana orchard along the side of the road, where we got to hear about the harvesting of bananas in the grove. We were also treated to a banana during this stop. The final stop was the Cahuita National Park. Upon arriving, we were immediately greeted with the sounds of monkeys in the trees. Throughout our walk, we saw numerous monkeys and raccoons, our guides also spotted bats and a snake in the trees. On our way back to the bus, we saw a crocodile and a turtle sunning themselves on the rocks. Oh, and the entire path through the park is rimmed with a beautiful beach. After leaving the national park, our driver was keeping his eyes open for a toucan (as they mostly come out in the afternoon). Somehow, he managed to spot one in the trees. We were returned to the pier in plenty of time to return to our ship. I want to particularly commend Yorlene for her skills as a guide. She spoke perfect English and spoke loudly enough that it was easy to hear her throughout the tour. And our driver did a terrific job of spotting wildlife throughout the tour. He definitely was more than just a driver. My only complaint with the tour is that the rest room facilities throughout are not great. At both the canal and the national park, the bathrooms are unisex with only a toilet in the room. Around the side of both buildings was a sink with soap and water. My advice--go at the fruit stand.

Thank you for your amazing review. We're flattered to know that you consider taking this tour was a great choice, and it's fantastic to know that you found it pleasant and informative. Great that you could see plenty of wildlife at the Tortuguero canals. Honestly, Yorleny is an excellent guide, who gives her best! Thanks again, and best wishes!

Wonderful guide, small group

We had a very similar itinerary to what was offered by our cruise line. That is where the similarities ended. Our small group meant we got on smaller boats and were able to really look for animals in their environment without scaring them off. Our boat driver was an excellent spotter and we saw unique animals. Our small group permitted us the time to have a lovely hike in the National park and question our extremely knowledgeable guide about the lifestyle and habitat of many of the insects. We also stopped in at a local restaurant to try some of the foods special to the area.

We had such a great day! We were well taken care of by our guide Frederico from Relax Day Tours. The boat sailing in Tortuguero Canals was amazing, our guide and boat driver were so good at spotting wildlife and very knowledgeable too. Cahuita NP is beautiful and the water is so warm bring a bathing suit. We appreciated being only our small group compare to a cruise ship extra-large one it made all the difference in the world. One of our best tour ever!!

The Tortugero Canals were great. We saw several animals. We did not see any animals in Cahuita, but it was a nice walk. Our guide was very nice, but not very knowledgeable.
