A visit to the Hoover Dam paired with a Colorado River float is a unique way to explore this momentous slice of U.S. History. During your tour enjoy ample time learning about this engineering wonder of the world through live presentations, exhibits, and a captivating film that investigates the Dam’s backstory and construction. Cap off your outing with a visit to see the power plant’s massive generators and some time on the observation deck.
Later, be treated to sensational views of the Colorado River and Lake Mead, the Western Hemisphere’s largest man-made lake. Board a van at the Lake Mead Overlook, and drive along the route on Lower Portal Road that the Dam crews of yesteryear once traveled. On the way, you can see the original gauging station that measured water level and flow as well as the storage bunkers that held dynamite during the Dam’s construction.
Next, get ready for some breathtaking views. A guided raft tour takes you floating on the Colorado River for an up-close and rarely seen look at the Hoover Dam, its power plants, and the stunning Black Canyon. Your guide shares tidbits of history as you float along the river beneath the extraordinary panorama of the Hoover Dam Bypass project—a 2,000-foot bridge built in 2010 spanning over 900 feet. Be sure to have your camera on hand as this tour gives you an incredible vantage point to capture photographs of the Hoover Dam and Colorado River.
