Thank you for this delightful experience! It started with a short walking tour around Gion, the geisha district. Our guide Mie was very knowledgeable and we learned a lot about geisha culture, history, and life. Then we arrived to the restaurant (we picked the private room option) to meet the geiko. So I don't know how it goes with dinner in the common room, but I can recommend the private room because you have all the geiko's attention for yourself. Our evening was basically a Q&A session where we could ask the geiko all we wanted to know while enjoing great food and sake. Geishas are really amazing entertainers, and everything was very informal and relaxed.

Amazing Evening and Experience

Whatever hesitation (about costs and the quality of the programming) that we had on how to experience the “Geisha culture” was quickly and resolutely dissipated the moment we met the guide (Ted) and entered the teahouse. We chose the private Japanese banquet option at a teahouse where we were accompanied by a Geisha (Geiko) and a Maiko. The experience started with a tour of the Gion district and an explanation of Geisha history and culture. Ted pointed out the buildings and their significance as we walked the streets at dusk. He described the unique system among the Maiko boarding houses, the teahouses, and the special kitchens that supply the food. He was very thorough with his descriptions and answered many of our questions. Seeing an actual Geisha and Maiko walk down the street and a man riding a bicycle while carrying freshly made food on his shoulder would have been a highlight for many people. However, meeting the Geisha and Maiko and having them converse with you, drink, and perform was more exciting and mesmerizing. The multi-course meals were as visually stunning as they were delicious. Ted was also very attentive: he served as an interpreter as we spoke with the Geisha and Maiko and ensured we enjoyed ourselves. We felt grateful to partake in this amazing encounter that is steeped in Japanese culture and traditions and is so rare for ordinary Japanese citizens, let alone tourists, to experience.

We enjoyed our walk in Kyoto as our guided describe the culture, area, and history. Then, finally reaching our dinner destination to dine and be entertained by a Maiko (Geisha apprentice). But I wish the ad was not misleading; it should say, “Private Dinner with a Geisha [apprentice].”
