Returns to original departure point
Immerse yourself in Japanese history and culture, during this exploration of the temples, shrines, and attractions found in the country’s former capital city of Nara. Spend a few hours discovering this historically significant capital, first established in the 8th century, as you admire its wealth of important religious sites and a one-of-a-kind deer park nearby.

Start your Nara trip in the afternoon with a pickup at Kyoto Handicraft Center or Avanti Tour Desk near Kyoto Station. After your pickup, proceed by coach on your Nara excursion. The city of Nara was founded in 710, when it was designated as the country’s first permanent capital. Nara, or Heijo as it was then known, was home to many of the most important Buddhist monasteries in the then-nascent Japanese empire, which made it a key center of political and religious power. As Nara’s power and influence grew, the city became a threat to the government, leading the country’s rulers to move the capital to Nagaoka in 784. Despite this shift in fortunes, Nara retains a wealth of important historical sites, including some of Japan’s most important Buddhist temples.

Stop by Nara’s Todaji Temple to start your trip. This magnificent edifice, constructed in the 8th century, is among the country’s most important religious buildings. Explore the temple’s Daibutsuden (Great Buddha Hall), one of the largest wooden buildings in the world, along with its immense bronze Buddha statue, which are just some of the treasures to be found in this incredible attraction.

Continue your Nara trip with a visit to its famous deer park, a unique 1,250-acre preserve where more than 1,000 deer freely roam. Admire these gentle creatures as they graze and wander the park, and stop to purchase special deer food, which the animals will gladly eat from your hand, if you wish.

Finish your discovery of Nara at the Shinto shrine of Kasuga, a serene site that features a collection of more than 3,000 stone and bronze lanterns. After leaving Kasuga, return by coach for a drop-off at select hotels in Kyoto.

Was a little rushed

This tour was great except for the fact that it was a little rushed. Our guide was fantastic and very informative on the bus ride there and back. At the great Buddah it was really amazing to see and the amount of time there was good - but when it was time to go to the next shrine due to a lot of traffic and then the sun going down I felt we were really rushed through and didn't get to enjoy it as much as I would have liked. My thought is maybe the tour could have started a bit earlier to give us some more time - but in saying that there is no way they can control the traffic so I don't think its the tour company's fault, just unfortunate for us. All in all a good tour though.

An excellent tour. The meeting point want as easy to find because of all the different exits from the train station but when we finally found it, the tour was great.

Engaging Guide

Guide was very engaging, however, as the first stop was Todaiji temple, we were waiting for a couple of people and was late behind our schedule for the next stop at Kasuaga temple. When we reached Kasuga temple, it was closed as the temple closes in autumn. However, please do check if there was any events around Nara as traffic was insane due to a exhibition held around the area. One of the main reasons why i didnt really enjoy was that the tour had a lot of waiting around, actual site was rushed and mainly traffic was bad which was beyond the hands of our tour guide. Wish our tour guide actually had provided us ear piece and speak into a microphone so we dont really need to rush and find her as well.

Easy half-day trip. Nice to get out of the city, pleasant diversion. Can't believe the focus in Nara on the deer despite the other attractions.

Excellent, charming and amusing guide. Learned more about Buddhism and Shinto than I knew before but with an amusing twist. The meal was also excellent.

Good to check things off a list

The bus tour is pretty much like any other one you can book. You get on the bus at the designated time (very punctual), you go to the pre-determined destination, take photos, then get back on the bus to do it over again until you get back to your starting point. For us, it was good enough because we didn't want to think about how to get to Nara from Kyoto (The trains in Japan are easy enough to navigate! We were just particularly lazy for this part of our trip). Overall, it served its purpose, but not something you should get if you want to take your time to look at the sights and really soak in the environment.
