Panstwowe Muzeum Auschwitz-Birkenau
Auschwitz-Birkenau Half-Day Trip from Krakow (7 hours) After pickup from the central meeting point or your hotel, start the 1.5-hour drive by minivan to Auschwitz-Birkenau, located outside the town of Oswiecim. During the ride, watch a documentary film about the former Nazi concentration camp. When you arrive, meet your tour guide at the visitor center, and then proceed into the barbed-wire encampment through the gate that still reads “Arbeit macht frei" (Work sets you free). Established in 1940, the Auschwitz complex saw the deaths of more than a million people, most of whom were European Jews. The complex, today a UNESCO World Heritage-listed museum, comprises the Auschwitz I camp and the Birkenau (or Auschwitz II) camp with a total of about 150 buildings and 300 ruins. Auschwitz was only partially destroyed by fleeing Nazis when the camp was liberated, so you are able to see many of the original brick buildings as you walk around. Explore the exhibitions, housed in some of the prison blocks, some of which are dedicated to victims from particular countries. You’ll also see Birkenau, once home to 300 prison barracks and four large gas chambers. Most of this camp was destroyed, but you will get an idea of the vast size of the area, fenced off with watchtowers, and you can enter some of the surviving barracks. When your Auschwitz-Birkenau tour ends, you'll be driven back to the original meeting point.

Wieliczka Salt Mine
Wieliczka Salt Mine Half-Day Trip (4 hours) Your tour begins with meet-up at the central meeting point followed by a 30-minute drive to the Wieliczka Salt Mine, southeast of the city. The 700-year-old mine and UNESCO World Heritage Site houses nearly 200 miles (300 km) of eerie tunnels, all carved by hand from salt blocks, and you’ll see the section that’s open to the public. With your guide, visit the three upper levels of the mine, at depths of 209 to 443 feet (64 to 135 meters). Begin with a descent down the stairs to the first level, where you’ll be led through chambers and shown underground lakes, shrines and salt monuments. Admire the showstopper – the Chapel of St. Kinga – and marvel at how every one of its features, from chandeliers to the altar, is made of salt! Hear from your guide about the chapel’s history and how it took more than 30 years for two men to complete the wonder, which required more than 200,000 tons of rock salt. Then head to the Eram Baracz Chamber to see another mine highlight, the salt lake whose water contains 11 ounces (320 grams) of salt per liter. You’ll also see a collection of mining equipment, some of which dates back to the Middle Ages. By the time your tour ends, you’ll be 443 feet below ground! Take an elevator back up, and then head back to Krakow by minivan.

Auschwitz concentration camp was a network of concentration and extermination camps built and operated by the Nazis. It is a poignant story of the past and hits you straight at your heart. As I went up and down the various buldings and the a few streets of the yester years, along with my guideprovided by Viator i shrivelled inside me. How can humans turn to animals? i went to the town centre,at 7 AM for my pickup and travelled in a comfortable mini van with 18 others.I came back around 1.30 PM, had a quick lunch in the nearby Polish restaurant and was back at the pickup point at 2.45PM/ The afternoon tour was just the opposite-exhilarating to see the preserved salt mines and to hear the story of the miners in a very telling way. It was not tiring and was well worth the day spent.

We did this trip over two days...

We did this trip over two days. Going to auschwitz was like going to a cattle market, it was very busy. The guide we had was good but sometimes found that what she was talking about we couldn't see as we hadn't entered the room yet because of the crowds of people. It was a three hour tour but could have spent longer there as we didn't see everything because of the time limit that we had. The salt mine trip we did the following day. I would fully recommend this trip except for the guide that we had that meet us off the mini bus, he was extremely rude and needed a lesson in people skills! One of the people in our tour asked if there was anytime after to look in the shops. His reply was if everyone agrees you can have ten minutes. If you are longer I will not wait for you, you can find your own way back to the bus. Arranging meeting points were not straight forward, leaving most of us confused. The tour guide inside the salt mine was great. It was busy but waited for the tour in front to move before explaining the monuments etc.

Great value for your money, long day of touring but our group was no more than 10 people and were very accommodating to our young child.

Salt mine tour was excellent....my only criticism would be on the Auschwitz tour the guide repeated herself quite a lot. I felt it was a little bit of a conveyor belt....we didn't really have time to pause and take it all in. I felt there were times when she should have just been quiet, especially when walking through the crematoria. I ended up taking my earphone out, just so I could take in what actually happened there....hope that makes sense.

Well paced in that we felt to do both in one day would have been too much. Both trips were well organised with knowledgeable guides, but on both trips we joined with other groups which made it hard to hear on occasions and seemed rushed, for example in Auschwitz we would have liked to look at and study the information and exhibits on display. We were four adults and whilst we would say both trips are a must when visiting Krakow, two of us felt the Salt Mine was only ok and would give it 3 stars.

I thoroughly enjoyed these two tours. Not only was the pickup on time but the guides friendly and knowledgeable. I feel that everybody should experience Auschwitz at least once. But Wielicka was my last day in Poland and the highlight of my trip. It was super!!! Beautiful!!! Both tours involve al lot of walking but it is totally worth the effort. The pure air down in the mine makes it easy to walk.

The tours overall were amazing. Very informative and well worth it. The guide for Auschwitz must have been in training as he was not very polished and kept asking the secondary guide we were with to fill in the blanks which she did in Polish, then he had to translate to English. He English was good, but not great considering it was an English tour. The mic also kept cutting out which was disappointing as it was hard to hear. The Salt Mine was very cool. The guide was amazing. The only challenge was getting out of the mine. It took nearly an hour of waiting in line after line to get onto the elevator. The elevator back up is terrifying. If you are claustrophobic, it will be a challenge for you. The only thing I wish I knew in advance was more detail about timing. How much time would be spent at each place and how many breaks we got. The timing was good, but had I known more in advance, it would have helped the experience.

The Auschwitz tour guide was fantastic as well as the Wieliczka tour. I think some organizational skills could really benefit this company such as dropping off the people who are doing the double trip first so that they don't spend an extra 25-30 minutes sitting on the bus dropping everyone else off first when we are the ones with minimal time to eat lunch before the next tour departs. Also, at the Salt mine, we had to sit an wait for 30-35 minutes for two people who did not correctly follow their tour guide instructions.
