Return Details

Returns to original departure point
Established in the early 1940s by the Nazis, Auschwitz was originally intended for Polish political prisoners. Later, when it was extended to include the neighboring site of Birkenau, it became an extermination camp for primarily European Jews, killing an estimated 1.1 million people.

Begin your trip at your Krakow hotel, where a driver will meet you at your preferred pickup time. Arrive outside the town of Oświęcim around 1.5 hours later, where you’ll join up with your guide at the camp’s visitor center.

Enter the gates of the complex under the chilling inscription of ‘Arbeit macht frei’ (‘Work sets you free’) and explore the key buildings and exhibitions that preserve the memory of the many lives lost there.

Learn how the Nazi camp functioned as you pass the barracks and watchtowers, as well as the gas chambers and crematoriums. Your guide will take care to discuss the harrowing stories in a sensitive manner as you go. You will have a brief break to eat a pre-packed lunch (own expense), as there are no eating facilities at the camp.

Afterward, visit the camp's memorial, and spend a quiet moment to remember the lives of the victims. Your tour will conclude with private transportation back to your Krakow hotel.

Stop At:
Panstwowe Muzeum Auschwitz-Birkenau
After roughly 1.5 hours, arrive at the visitor center. Here, take your leave of your private driver and set off on a guided group tour of the UNESCO-listed site. Enter the gates of the compound under the chilling inscription of ‘Arbeit macht frei’ or ‘work sets one free,’ and learn how the Nazi concentration camp was founded in 1940 as a detention camp for Polish prisoners before becoming an extermination center for the Jews of Europe and other ‘anti-social’ groups. Discover how this change saw Auschwitz extended to include neighboring Birkenau, creating a camp that was to claim the lives of an estimated 1.1 million people. Explore the key buildings — some still intact and some in ruins — and see the exhibitions that chart the fates of many of those imprisoned here. View the crematoriums and gas chambers, and gaze at Birkenau’s watchtowers and barracks as you hear how the camp was run and guarded. While the facts of what happened here are distressing, your guide will explain everything in a sensitive and considered way. Break from your explorations to visit the memorial to the camp’s victims, and spend a few moments in memory of those who were detained here not so long ago. During your tour, there will be a brief break for lunch. There are no eating facilities at Auschwitz-Birkenau, so please bring your own refreshments on the day. Afterward, leave your group and meet back up with your driver and car. Then, travel directly back to your Krakow hotel, where your tour concludes.

Very Respectfully Done Tour

The tour was very informative and provided a decent amount of information without being overloaded. We were in a medium size group and we could clearly hear the tour guide with the headphones provided. Our taxi driver, Michael, was excellent and played a film about the camps to us on the way there. It is a lot of walking over uneven terrain and includes many stairs.

A haunting but important tour everyone going to Krakow should see. We took a private transfer and met up with our tour group at Auschwitz. Our tour guide was very knowledgable and informative. Its a tour I will never forget.

A little disappointed

After reading great reviews of this tour we were a little disappointed. We selected the English tour with round trip private transfers. Our driver didn’t speak a word of English and we were a little surprised to have a “Taxi” pick us up. This was the private transfer. A nice man however just not what we were expecting as the tour states a professional driver in a private vehicle...not a taxi! Other reviews state to pack a bag with food and drink as there’s nothing available there however there’s everything available. There is a Restaurant at both Auschwitz 1 and Birkenau where you can buy food, drink, ice cream etc. The tour guide was great and informative however it’s a basic tour and we didn’t go into all of the exhibitions at Auschwitz 1. We had our 3yr old son with us so the time was OK however if you wanted an extended tour I would recommend getting the audio guides and having a look at everything in your own time and pace.

Poor communication

The tour of Auschwitz & Birkenau was very good and I would give it 5 stars. However, Viator's communication was poor. We were surprised by the lack of precise timing for pick up and when we emailed we got NO RESPONSE. When we rang the day before the tour, we were given 12.15pm when we had asked for 9.45am. The driver was good, but not a tour guide - only his second trip to the site.

This was a truly moving and emotional experience. Our driver Michael, while not the tour guide, was very informative. A very smart guy who share his experiences, videos and asked us questions too. We chatted with him both ways from Krakow and back. We thank Michael for his insights and conversation and his love for Poland and teaching us about Poland. Thanks, Michael.

The tour is quite shattering, so be emotionally and physically prepared. Don't plan much that night and don't go alone. The tour guide was just fantastic. Deeply knowledgeable and you could tell that what she was telling us just scratched the surface of the story. Because of the tour, I bought several books at the bookstore and, less than 24-hours later, I have already finished one. Reading these histories is completely different when the narrator refers to a place or a building, and you have been there. There is a lot of walking, so wear good shoes. It was probably the most meaningful tour I have ever been on. We used the private transport, and our driver was also just excellent. He provided history as we drove, and yet also knew exactly when we needed to contemplate in quiet. He also suggested other tours which we booked immediately based on this experience.

Wasn't looking forward to this trip, but so glad I went. Its important that we see and hear what happened, so it doesn't happen again. We were meet on time from out hotel in a comfortable minivan. On route he showed us a film which set the mood of the visit and prepared us emotionally as to what to expect. This trip has lots of walking especially when you visit Birkenau, so be warned. Little time between Auschwitz and Birkenau visits so maybe bring food and drink with you. There are cafes in Auschwitz but depending on when you go could have queues.

I had hired a private driver to take a friend and myself on this tour. Dominic was professional, helpful and considerate. During our 90 minute drive to Auschwitz-Birkenau, we were shown a video in the car. It was extremely helpful in giving me more information about what I was to see upon arrival. Upon the end of the tour at Birkenau, Dominic was waiting for us.This is a tour everyone should take. The nations of the world need to work together so the horrors that happened at these camps never, never, happens again. There are no words to express the complete devastation, inhumanity that I witnessed while touring the remains of these sites. Photos will never do it justice.
