Discover what makes Arenal a favorite Costa Rican destination. After early morning pickup at your Jaco-area hotel, relax on the approximately 3.5-hour drive north to Arenal Volcano National Park. Breakfast will be provided along the way. Once you arrive at the park, take in breathtaking views of Arenal Volcano, which is one of the most active craters in the Western Hemisphere! Accompanied by your knowledgeable guide, explore the rocky lava beds and forested scenery at the base of the volcano.

Walk to viewing platforms for an unbeatable view of the peak, which reaches 5,436 feet (1,657 meters) above sea level. You may be able to see plumes of smoke and rivers of molten lava streaming from the active cauldron. Be assured that the volcano is carefully monitored for activity and trails are chosen for visitor safety.

After a lunch of typical Costa Rican cuisine, it’s time to relax at one of the area’s popular natural hot springs. Try out many geothermal pools of varying temperatures to find your favorite, and enjoy the beautiful tropical surroundings. From secluded pools to cascading waterfalls, soak up the restorative properties of volcanic mineral water and take in views of the sputtering volcano in the distance.

After several hours at the spa, bask in your newfound bliss on the return drive to Jaco, where you’ll be dropped off back at your hotel in the evening.

Rip Off! Grey Line Tours: LIARS AND CHEATS!
Brad_B
, May 2021
DO NOT BOOK FROM THIS COMPANY, they are LIARS and CHEATS! They took our money and did not provide the tour we paid for. We booked this trip for our guests as a gift. They took them to Los Lagos for the day - that is all they did. After our guests return and told us how the day unfolded, I sent an email to the company asking why our guests did not get any part of the tour we paid for except a ride to the volcano and 2 meals. They told me that their tour guide said because our guest used a wheelchair (which she absolutely does NOT - she does not own a wheelchair) that they had to alter the tour because of it and that they explained all that to our guests prior to leaving the hotel and our guests agreed to it. NONE of that was true. The tour was supposed to take our guests to the volcano, then to Baldi hot springs, then to Rio Chollin. The guest in question had a walking stick - no handicap issues, but moves a little slow doing stairs because of some arthritis in her knee and took the walking stick knowing she would be climbing over rocks at the river. This trip was booked as a gift, so our friends did not question why they were not doing what we told them they were supposed to be doing. The tour company picked them up from a hotel in Jaco, where they spent the night before in a room on the second floor (which they would not have been able to do if they had a wheelchair) took them directly to Los Lagos for the day, with a stop for breakfast and lunch at Los Lagos. After several emails attempting to get some sort of partial refund and explaining to them there was no wheelchair, they simply refused to believe me and refused to believe that the tour guide lied. I told them to ask the hotel if our guests were there with a wheelchair and they refused to do that. We paid $363 for a tour we did not get. I have been to Los Lagos a couple of times and it is a nice place but certainly inferior to Baldi. No visit to the volcanic park, no visit to the natural hot spring river (Rio Chollin). They refused to give us even a partial refund. After several attempts to speak to them, they told us they would make no further considerations because our guest had a wheelchair and therefore they refused to communicate with us any further and their decision was final. In addition, the driver slept in the van while the guests were at Los Lagos and left the lights on and the engine was dead when it was time to leave. The guests had to push the van to get it going. I will never take or recommend a tour from Grey Line Tours again. Liars and Cheats! DO NOT BOOK WITH THEM!!!!!

The hot springs feel amazing but the trip is very long. If it is cloudy or rainy as it is almost daily in the region you cannot see the volcano. The restaurant food was great on the included lunch. The resort was very nice as well but a 2.5 hr trip each way just for some warm water and pretty flowers did not seem worth while.

This trip was booked and PREPAID in April for a May tour. We reconfirmed by email before we left the states as well. The tour operator was an hour late and only when we called from our hotel front desk did they quickly rebook with another sub-tour company. The original local tour operator lied and said they had trouble with the tour van at a hotel. Apparently, the driver broke down and didn't bother to tell anybody that he left 4 people stranded with no tour. Real professional. The new tour operators had never done this tour before so basically shared nothing with us on a LONG 3 1/2 hour ride up and back. In fact, we get to the volcano and they show us the 2 entrances but we never get to go in or do the things we signed up for and listed in the tour description hanging bridge, volcano observatory, nature hike, etc.. They stopped ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY so we could get photos! So, when Viator says submit your photos of your trip, I had to laugh! Not only were we rushed through that part of the tour, we almost missed the lunch buffet at the hot springs resort that was included in the package. We got there with only a 1/2-hour to spare and all the food was cold or picked over. We did get to dip some toes into the hot springs, but the tour operators told us to hurry up because they wanted to get back before dark mind you, after the local tour operator had scrambled to get someone else to pick us up for this tour due to their lack of organization/professionalism. Awful waste of our time and money!

I would not recommend this tour from Jaco as the drive time is too long. We were able to see the volcano from the road but never got a good photo of it. The hot springs were relaxing and the lunch was good at the Baldi Hot Springs but we were there only for about two hours before starting our return trip. This would work best for those closer to this site.

It was interesting to discover the 5 stars hotel and spa for testing the hot spring! Nice moments of relaxation!!! But to be in a car 8 hours and never have a explanation about the places seen on the window, or history or culture about the country was rather disappointing. The guide was not able to have a discussion in English or Spanish and never was able to answer our questions about the region we visit!!!! The atitude was so strange, he told us at the bigining of the day that he is tired but he is happy to do this job beacause he can eat at 5 stars restaurant with tourists like us??!!!!! We saw the Arenal from far....The guide ask more money if we want to see a water fall who was 5 km further...we refused this "offer", but it was so strage,we've already payed a lot for this trip!

This tour was excellent! Be aware that it is about 4 hours to get there and another 4 back, and it's a winding ride (definitely not a good choice for those with motion sickness). The tour guide and driver were absolutely awesome. They were happy to answer any questions we had about Costa Rican culture, vegetation, economy, local festivals, and etc. The Baldi hot springs were amazing, and we had a good 4 hours to try out each of the beautifully landscaped pools ranging from cool to steamy warm.

Wow! It is very difficult to put into words the experience we had at Arenal Volcano and Hot Springs. Anyone Visiting Costa Rica this a place to visit. Viator is the company to go with. Their drivers and guides go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and to explain the history and culture. Just what we were looking for, amazing! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND VIATOR

The resort where we spent the day in the hot springs was nice. It was fairly crowded, yet the scenery of the hot springs and beautiful flowers was wonderful and we had a nice, relaxing day there. The meals were also great. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and made the drive to the volcano very nice, it was a complete tour of Costa Rica!
