Meet your guide in central Iasi in the morning, and climb into a private vehicle for the drive from Moldavia to Bucovina, a historic region on the slopes of the Eastern Carpathians. Once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire for more than 130 years until 1918, today Bucovina crosses the border between Romania and Ukraine.
Begin with a visit to the Voronet Monastery, often referred to as the ‘Sistine Chapel of Eastern Europe’ thanks to its distinctive blue frescoes depicting the Last Judgment. Learn about the monastery’s ties to Moldavian ruler Stephan the Great, who dedicated much of his life to defending his kingdom against Ottoman Turks during the Dark Ages.
After a 30-minute drive through beautiful mountain scenery, reach the Monastery of Moldovita, which dates back to 1532 and was among the first of Bucovina’s unique painted monasteries. Then, cross the Obcina Mare Mountain to visit the 16th-century Byzantine and Gothic Sucevita Monastery, one of the region’s last churches to feature ornate interior and exterior paintings.
Finally, cap off the full-day cultural tour with stop at a traditional black pottery workshop in Marginea before returning to Iasi in the evening.
