Returns to original departure point
Your Hobart cycling adventure starts as you’re outfitted with a mountain bike and helmet. From the top of Mt Wellington, admire the view of the sprawling city and River Derwent before hopping on your bike and taking off with your guide down the mountain. As the alpine terrain turns into a more verdant forest environment, make stops to enjoy the scenery and take photos.

Your winding route takes you into the Wellington foothills, where you can detour into an off-road section, if you wish (see below for more details). Then continue into the suburbs of South Hobart and past historical Battery Point, finishing your 2-wheeled journey on the Hobart waterfront at Salamanca Place.

This biking tour is designed for all levels of fitness; total cycling distance is 13 miles (21 km).

Off-road biking:

If you’re feeling adventurous during your bike tour, you may veer off the bike track into approximately 3 miles (5 km) of dirt-trail off-road cycling before meeting back up with the rest of the group about 20 minutes later at a rest stop. The whole group will then finish the bike tour together by riding into Hobart. (If you do not take the off-road route, the support van will follow to the meeting point.)

The guide was excellent, the bikes were well equipped. The ride felt a little tame though, beautiful scenery but not much work required.

Thank you for reviewing our tour! We are happy to know you enjoyed the scenery and the guide's expertise and we are sorry you found the tour a bit tame. However, as the tour is designed for people of average fitness level, we understand you may have felt like that if you are used to mountain biking single tracks. Best wishes!

This was an excellent tour, I really enjoyed it, and would defiantly do it again. The guides were very help full and knowledgeable, They made sure everyone was comfortable with what they were doing. There was several stops for those slower riders to catch up. And the instructions were very clear and help full. It was the best feeling riding down Mt Wellington, and got some great photos. This was really a great experience. I am a 51 year old female who bike rides regularly and I think this was suitable for all ages and bike riding experiences.

Thrilling scenic ride but not for children

Reasonable bike control skills are required because the first half of the ride was all downhill with tight corners and minimal peddling. Not suitable for children but thrilling for teenagers, young adults and MAMILS (middle aged men in lycra). There is also opportunity to go off road for part of the ride but nervous riders like me stuck on the road. The two guides were very good at making sure all riders were safe with the bus driver tailing the slowest/last rider while the cycling guide led the riders. Fun activity for young adults and the young at heart.

Not suitable for all riders

I went on this ride with my 12-year-old son. The tour guides were very knowledge explaining the surrounds and history of the Hobart. It would be great to have more off-road riding. Be aware you are riding with other vehicles on the road. You need to be competent in riding on-road amongst cars and buses. My son is a good off-road rider, however, a bus turned a tight bend and was approaching him and he was riding down the hill. He hit the gravel, lost control of the bike and then hit the safety barrier. He was very lucky he only walked away with 2 badly cut fingers, cuts and grazes and a broken toe. The tour guides, Matt and Mick were straight onto in applying first aid. The company rang us the next day to check on our son. It did impact our trip because he was unable to participate in activities after that. I am a competent and experienced downhill rider, and I completed the trip while my son was driven down. I found the tour good and would recommend it if you are experienced in downhill, on-road riding.

What an excellent tour, run by a friendly, informative and lovely tour guide (not driver). Great fun way to see the view and conquer the mountain while breathing in the fresh (cool) air on tbe way down. If you are any level of fitness and can ride a bike, a must do tour while in Hobart. Thanks for the memories.

While it was difficult to stop...

While it was difficult to stop touring the wonderful city of Hobart, I'm so glad I opted for the bike ride from the top of Mt. Wellington. The pick-up spot was easy to find and, once loaded up, we started the long ride to the top. Commentary from both the driver and guide kept us informed about what we could expect with the bike ride as well as local history/information. The views at the top are stunning and we had a little time to walk around a bit and take photos and explore. The bike trip was effortless...all downhill except for a few slight uphill spots but never even had to shift gears. The on-road sections were smooth riding but a little unnerving because we shared the curvy road with cars although traffic was light. The off-road section while bumpy, was calmer and slower. We were never pressed to hurry and the guide always reminded us to take it at our own pace. VERY enjoyable experience and I would highly recommend it!
