Start your evening walking tour when you meet your guide on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh Old Town. Your guide will be dressed as one of the city’s long-deceased, real-life characters, and on route, you’ll discover his or her identity, and hear fascinating stories about them.

For starters, head down lanes and wynds off the Royal Mile that were once the heart of Edinburgh’s slums and rife with intrigue and criminality. Roam the cramped passageways and closes, and discover true stories about their history and occupants, and the mysteries that still swirl around them.

Next, pass through a dark graveyard, believed to be haunted, and steeped in lore and legend. See some of the interesting tombstones, and soak in the spooky atmosphere.

Then, descend into some of Edinburgh’s infamous underground vaults, a network of 18th-century chambers that contain remnants of an old street and buildings. Learn about the poor who once lived here in squalor, and hear anecdotes about ghosts, witchcraft, murders, and other grisly occurrences.

As you look around, watch and listen for unexplained happenings and noises in the tunnels, before returning to street level. Your tour then concludes when you bid farewell to your guide.

Natalie the guide

Purely based on our guide Natalie’s knowledge and charm. She has us laughing the whole way through. The underground section was locked off in parts due to COVID which was upsetting as not disclosed in the original booking, so we were disappointed with that. However, Natalie was a brilliant guide and this was not her fault, she couldn’t apologise more for certain areas being closed off and the tour being not as in depth as it would normally be.

We were a bit confused initially about where to meet but it’s just a box right outside Starbucks on the royal mile. Our tour guide Joe was very good, he stayed in character and explained everything really well. If we had a question for him he always knew the answer. I would recommend this tour

Not as promising as the title

It was more like a historic tour in a couple of monuments or locations. The organisers could have thought of something to add an element of freight, especially for children. Expected to see more of the underground Edinburgh. The GUIDE though (ISAAC or Dr Bell) WAS VERY GOOD. He did his best to make it as pleasant as he could. Thank you Isaac

We enjoyed the tour because this is our first visit to Edinburgh and we learnt a lot regarding its customs and habits in the past years. Our tour was guided by David and he was really excellent in his speech, his tone and his multiple resources to create a very special atmosphere. We had a different experience walking through the city at night. Very interesting!!
