Once you get to the building, check in with your voucher (either electronic or paper), which allows you to skip the queues, and get your 'passport' for the upcoming journey. Visit each of the 20 galleries on a self-guided tour; the experience generally takes 1.5 hours, and you can enter any time during opening hours. Spend your time collecting stamps in your play passport—you can get one at each gallery. Staff located throughout the building can also answer questions.

As you go, learn the reasons why more than 10 million Irish people left the island, as well as the struggles and triumphs that came with leaving. Find out where they went and why, and discover stories about some of the 70 million people around the world who claim Irish ancestry today.

Time well spent

My husband and I visited The Irish Emigration Museum this weekend and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Our only regret is that we ran out of time as had a prior engagement. I will certainly revisit. I would rate it as top ten things to do in Dublin.

This museum was highly interactive and educational. The pace through the different exhibits was perfect. I never felt that I could not see or pushed through from people behind us. Raw information and very touching....power to the Irish people!

Absolutely fascinating place set in Dublin's up and coming Docklands area; I would have loved to spend more time in the museum to explore all the different sections it had to offer. You learn so much about the Irish emigration and some fascinating stories from different characters that were all part of it. Very interactive and thought-provoking museum that makes you wonder if there could be a bit of Irish in yourself!

What a fantastic place. Wish we had more time. To really experience it, I would recommend planning at least 3 - 4 hours.
