Gullah culture is vital
Maurice_D

Theatrical presentation of the Gullah experience in America is vital to understanding our past present and future. The number, activities, sufferings and joys of slaves in Charleston also enhance our perspective about our culture and heritage. Viewing Boone Hall today - the historic slave quarters, fields and gardens - and listening to commentaries never (correctly) explained in the (public) education system - heightens our awarenesses of who we are becoming? Our tour van driver-narrator, Alan, was well informed, clear, congenial and thoughtful. Receptionists at each station were enthused, determined and encouraging. It was a pleasant tour - some thanks to overcast, moderate weather too. Everyone is adjusting well to the virus that We will defeat.

Lovely tour

Our shuttle driver, Shawn, was very informative. He also gave great advice on a restaurant that we enjoyed later that evening. The plantation was amazing. The avenue of the oaks was impressive. Our kids (14, 10, 7, 4) enjoyed it, all taking away different aspects.

Avenue of Oaks was the highlight

The "Avenue of Oaks" was the most impressive part of this tour. The house itself was so disappointing. I did not know when I booked the tour that people are actually living in the mansion, so we only got to see two rooms. VERY disappointing. The Slave quarters were interesting as was the Gullah experience. "DJ" the tour guide for the drive around the property was especially annoying with his over-the-top dramatization of his speech.

Cancellation without notification

Never made it on the tour since the tour provider cancelled without notification. Showed up to the meeting point in time, no driver. Another driver told me to wait since they were likely picking up other guests from their hotels. Waited, and waited. He finally decided to give the main office a call. Lady at the office told him that they cancelled the tour. No attempt to make contact with me, no notification through Viator, no apology. Oddly enough, I received a follow-up questionnaire through Viator that reached me just fine. Thanks for nothing. Thanks for wasting my time, and leaving me hanging. Advise to other travelers: skip this tour and use ride-share to get to Boone Hall. Lyft was ~ $20 one-way from downtown Charleston, no issues with pick-up at the plantation, and ticket at the plantation is $24 as of February 2020.

Overpriced package

If staying in Mount Pleasant, use your own car. Not worth cost of van driver, who only gave us her family info, not much about the areas we drove through. House tour, 40+ adults & children, didn't have enough time to really look at everything in the 4 rooms we went in. More people & 1 less room than tour details specified. Slave cabins history info & Gullah history were the most worthwhile part of tour. Butterfly cafe closed before time stated on sign. Overall, excess cost was not justified.

My friend and I booked this tour and found it lived up to our expectations. It was well run and well laid out. The old slaves quarters were especially interesting and informative. Would recommend this tour if you have the time.
