Overview

Snorkel the Great Maya Reef on a half-day snorkeling tour of two different reef sites in Puerto Morelos. Spot fish, marine wildlife, and vibrant corals as you swim alongside the snorkel guides, then enjoy some free time to explore the fishing village of Puerto Morelos. This snorkel tour includes all equipment, lunch at a beach club, and round-trip transport from centrally-located hotels in Cancun and the Riviera Maya.
  • Beach club access and lunch included
  • Choice of morning or afternoon departure
  • Small group tour limited to 14 people
  • Pickup and drop-off from your hotel in the area
Meet a driver at your hotel for the trip to Puerto Morelos, a laid-back town with roots as traditional fishing community (if your hotel is not in the pickup area, you can meet the driver at a central location).

Upon arrival at Puerto Morelos, go over the basics of snorkeling safety and technique, then suit up with a life jacket and snorkel gear including a brand-new tube. You’ll visit two different locations on the reef with time to snorkel at each one, for a varied look at Puerto Morelos' underwater world. While the wildlife changes from day to day, it’s common to spot sea turtles, rays, and many species of fish at both of these reef sites.

Following your time in the water, shower and change for a stroll through Puerto Morelos, where you can browse small shops, or just find a spot on the beach to enjoy the Caribbean sunshine. Meet back up for lunch at a Puerto Morelos beach club, then make the return trip to your hotel in Cancun or the Riviera Maya, where this tour concludes.

The snorkel excursion was a fun side trip for my teens and me. The location is right on the beach on Puerto Morelos with the boat moored right on the beach. Short trip to the area to snorkel, we spent about 45 minutes in the water in two locations. Headed back to shore for a quick walk down the street and then a lunch at the hotel where the snorkel home base is located. There was a bit of waiting around which wasn't ideal after the snorkeling was done, lunch was simple tacos included in price for excursion but drinks were not. I would have figured that at least a bottle of water would be included with the meal.

Friendly staff, but not great snorkeling

The staff was great and very friendly. The reefs however weren’t much to look at. The water was decent but there was a bit of seaweed. I wish we would have known that we can’t take our GoPro! We bought one just for this trip and it wasn’t allowed. The lunch was good, but only tacos are included.

Communication could have been better and pickup was a little disorganized and so we almost missed it and van was old, super hot and in poor condition. Staff at the snorkeling place were helpful and kind with my kids which was great, especially since my youngest ended up not liking it and went back to the boat right away. Got to see a sea turtle, manta ray and cool fish. Overall worth the trip but was annoyed by the fact that they told me it was "bad for the reef" to take my cell phone in a waterproof case around my neck with us. I put it in the locker out of respect for the reef but realized it was a lie when they then tried to sell us pictures they took of us snorkeling for $50!! Total scam/rip-off. Wish I had ignored him and taken my phone anyway because now we have no pictures of the experience. Lesson learned.

Let me start off by saying that the Snorkeling itself was only part of the issue. The Tour Clearly states that it goes to 2 spots for 40 minutes each. Unfortunately, we only went to one spot for about 55 minutes. While it was longer than 40 minutes it certainly wasnt 80 minutes. Another person on the tour get very upset and eventually they gave in for him for a very short other site literally 10 minutes. The big problem was with the transportation provided. On the way from our resort, we had to stop at another resort and pick up another group of people for another tour. The Resort was about 15 minutes out of the way. It also took like 10 more minutes for the people to be found and get on the van. After picking them up we had to go to a Seven Eleven Store and wait until someone else came to pick them up. We waited over 30 minutes then finally went to Puerto Morelos. It literally took over an additional hour to get to the tour. The drive back was far worse. We waited 40 minutes for the driver after the tour and lunch ended. When he got there we went to the same Seven Eleven Store. We waited 20 minutes at the Seven Eleven and then were told to go into a different Van. We then waited 40 more minutes for the same people that we had picked up earlier. By the time they got there and we finally dropped them off, our ride back to Puerto Aventuras took a total of 2 hours and 45 minutes to get to a place 45 minutes away. This was an awful experience and ruined our day. We were picked up at 11:30am and arrived back at our Resort at 6:40pm. We Snorkeled for 55 Minutes, had a 30 minute lunch and the travel took basically 5.5 Hours for what should have been 1.5 hours. This review isn't exaggerated or biased, completely truthful and horrid experience!

We were very disappointed with our snorkeling trip. Our guide didn't know anything about the fish and corals we were taken out to see and the equipment we were given to use did not all fit properly and made the time in the water quite uncomfortable. After we got back from the water, we had a lunch and a brief walk around the town. After that, we waited 1-1/2 hours for the van to come pick up us, getting us back to our hotel very late. All in all, we were displeased with the tour and would not recommend it to anyone.

Prepared to accommodate snorkelers of all levels, this team made the experience as enjoyable and safe as possible for our ability. The tour afterward and the lunch were satisfying as well. English was on point.

Hubby and I had a great time snorkeling at Puerto Morelos. We specifically wanted to snorkel at this reef because we read that it was the 2nd largest reef in the world. There was a lot to see at this reef - we saw plenty of fish, HUGE corals, anemones, lobsters, stingrays, etc. We were picked up promptly from our hotel in the Cancun hotel zone and were driven to Puerto Morelos 30 min South where we met our guide, Eduardo. We were given equipment goggles, fins and brand new snorkel as well as towels. We were the only 2 people that doing the snorkel tour that day which was nice. We went out on a small boat and drove to 2 reefs. We snorkeled for about 45 minutes at each reef site, following the captain who pointed out various things to see. Afterwards, we had time to change and had lunch at a beach-front restaurant right next door where the food was decent. We then walked around the small town of Puerto Morelos with our guide until our ride came.
