Begin with pickup at your Cairo or Giza hotel, and travel to Alexandria in an air-conditioned minivan. Get a briefing on your day’s itinerary along the way, and take in views of the scenery on the drive towards the Mediterranean coast.

Make your first stop at the Alexandria National Museum, where a series of exhibits illustrate Alexandria’s grand past, from Graeco-Roman times to the pharaohs, Byzantine empire, and the arrival of Islam. Continue to the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, three tiers of underground burial chambers that blend Roman, Greek, and Egyptian styles. Painted figures and statues bring the ancient world to life in an underground funereal banquet hall, burial chambers, and passageways sunk into solid rock. Visit Pompey’s Pillar, a monolithic triumphal column that celebrates the Emperor Diocletian in solid red Aswan granite.

Pause for a seafood lunch at a local restaurant, then visit the Library of Alexandria, a modern facility that pays tribute to the city’s ancient library. The elegant building makes room for 20 million books, and the granite exterior is inscribed with characters from 120 different writing systems. After visiting the library make the return trip to Cairo, where this tour concludes with drop-off at your hotel.

Another on-time pick up. Great. I booked this trip b/c it entailed a 3 hour drive which allowed me to see parts of Egypt, albeit driving on the road. Wished I had another guide. His first interest was my marital and family status travelled by myself. He fell asleep for 20 minutes less than half way to Alex and periodically nodded off on the way back. The driver kept looking at him in disbelief.,,I felt the same way. I had two other guides who spoke and understood English better than he did. He told me before we went into the library at Alex that I could not take pictures. He again mentioned it several times and I repeatedly asked where are the signs that said I could not. Lo and behold, people were taking pictures. And no such signs existed. Hmmm! I have to say that particular guide was off putting in many ways. He gave me information on the tours of the places we visited such as the Citadel and a burial tomb that I could have read myself. In fact, I did just that b/c I couldn't understand him at times. The driver, on the other hand, was awesome. He spoke very little English so there wasn't much of any communication. However, he handled the traffic skillfully and is to be recommended for that. And let it be known that driving in Cairo is a skill that is a must.
