Overview

In terms of history, scenery, and marine life, there isn’t anywhere on the Big Island of Hawaii that compares to Kealakekua Bay. This protected cove on the island’s west shore is where Captain Cook met his end, and today a memorial stands at the bay to honor the famous explorer. On this guided Big Island kayaking tour, hear the history of Captain Cook as well as surrounding temples, and, after paddling past rugged sea cliffs and caves, snorkel and swim in the clear waters of this Marine Life Conservation District.

Meet you guide at the designated start time and location: 82-5674 Kahau Place Captain Cook Hawaii 96740, before setting out towards the Captain Cook Monument and Kealakekua Bay.

As you paddle the clear, protected waters, keep an eye out for Hawaiian spinner dolphins as they splash and leap by the shore. In winter, it’s common to see humpback whales as they spout and breach in the distance. Throughout the paddle, your local guide explains the features you see along the coast, from towering sea cliffs or Pali o Kapu o Keoua to Napo’opo’o Beach and the ancient remnants of Kawa’aloa village.

When you eventually arrive at the Captain Cook monument, pull your kayak up on the shore and prepare for the scenic hike, and spend time snorkeling the waters of Kealakekua Bay. Enjoy lunch by the monument, soaking in the views.

The tour ends with a guided paddle back to Napoopoo Landing.

This was an AMAZING 3.5 hours. If you get the chance…..take it. First you must know that your guides, Travis and Andrew will absolutely take great care of you. They are funny, caring AND knowledgeable. Be ready for a work out, the kayaking is about a mile out but so worth it! The snorkeling spot was clear and the sights were phenomenal!

Awesome experience!

What an absolute joy! This was truly an unforgettable experience. Check-in was very easy and our guides made us feel right at home instantly. From there we drove a short distance down to the drop-in spot and were on our way paddling across the bay in no time. The highlight was when 8-10 dolphins swam right up to our group and were so close you could touch (but of course DON'T TOUCH them!) The paddle was relaxing and enjoyable looking at the scenery. Over at the Captain Cook monument we spent some time snorkeling and having snacks. Our guides were knowledgeable and personable, and made the whole experience run smoothly and fun. Thank you Aloha Kayak company for an excellent experience! Will definitely recommend and hope to return one day!

Chill, Fun, and Delicious Pineapple

Best guided tour ever! The two guides were funny and energetic, straight up and very well organized. I am 7 months pregnant and they were so helpful and accommodating to my needs! My husband and I had a great time, and would recommend this over the bigger guided tours. The pineapple was delicious! I couldn’t have too much since it helps you go into labor, but I almost couldn’t stop lol.

Amazingly cooperative and helpful crew

The staff was extremely cordial and pleasant. They made sure we were comfortable and went above and beyond to ensure so. The spot they chose for snorkeling was perfect - we spotted a variety of fish and beautiful corals. Being a non-swimmer, I was afraid to participate in this activity, but the crew was so helpful that i decided to give it a shot! Thanks, you guys!!!
