Overview

The Big Island of Hawaii has a diverse ecosystem unlike anywhere else on the planet, and on this day-long nature tour, experience the beauty of its black-sand beaches, thundering waterfalls, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. If you’re lucky, find Hawaiian green sea turtles basking on the coast. Since the tour only requires a moderate amount of walking, it's an educational adventure for travelers of all ages, with snacks and refreshments included.
  • A tour of Hawaii’s biggest island highlighting its natural wonders
  • Visit the most dramatic waterfalls on the island, Akaka and Rainbow Falls
  • Lunch included for an added convenience
  • Group size is limited to 13 people to ensure a quality experience

Why Travelers Choose This Tour

A small group limited to 13 makes this a more personalized way to see the best of the Big Island.
This full day adventure of the Big Island of Hawaii begins on the Kona coast, where you’re picked up from your Kona or Kohala hotel, and driven north on a scenic journey past historic Parker Ranch—which has operated as one of the largest ranches in America since 1847.

As you pass through the ranching town of Waimea, watch as the landscape changes from pastures to green, tropical rainforest, as sweeping views of the Hamakua Coast start creeping into view. During a stop at Waipio Valley lookout, marvel at the way the vertical cliffs seem to explode from the green valley floor and hear the tales of how King Kamehameha was raised in this valley as a child. The adventure continues as you wind your way down the Hamakua Coast, past roadside towns with singsong names until you reach Akaka Falls and Rainbow Falls.

Make your way back toward sea level at Punalu’u Beach, where you’ll take a stroll on a black-sand beach and search for Hawaiian green sea turtles. Head next to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, before rounding the southern tip of the island, the southernmost point in America. Look out for Kealakekua Bay, the spot where Captain Cook was killed in a skirmish with Native Hawaiians.

Stop at a Kona coffee farm to learn about the coffee growing process and walk through a lava tube.

Finally, your tour finishes back in Kona with a drop off at your hotel, where you’ve earned the right to plop on the bed and relax after the full day adventure.

Please note: Depending on weather conditions, your tour may operate in reverse order.

We had a great time. We did the circle tour and this allowed us to see areas of the island we otherwise would not have. Daniel was our tour guide and we found him to be fun, cool, and very knowledgeable.

This tour was a wonderful way to see the big island! I flew over from Oahu for the day and it did not disappoint!! My tour guide, Awana was fantastic. He talked about the island and its history the entire day!!! I am not sure I could talk AND drive as much as he did but he did it with style and awesomeness!!! Thank you Awana!!! Great way to see a lot of what the big island has to offer!

Absolutely amazing!! Awana was the most informative tour guide I’ve ever taken. It was such a pleasure learning about the island, it’s culture, history and some of it’s very important leaders. Awana knew it all and even had great stories and anecdotes from his lovely family. Super friendly and the sites were spectacular. All in all, a truly great experience and I would highly recommend anyone take this trip again!! A must do!! ;)

Our tour guide, Awana, made us feel welcomed and excited to be touring the Big Island! Along the way we learned about Hawaiian culture, history, and travel sites to see during our visit. We had a blast! It was a long day, but it went by so fast. The van was spacious and the snacks were plentiful! 11/10 would go again!

Best tour to take. We were so lucky to get Derek as our guide for the day. What a fabulous bank of knowledge he has, and what a lovely man to spend the day with. Highlight of our trip. Got to stop at great spots, bakery for the Malasadas, waterfalls were beautiful, walked through the lava tube - awesome! The Black Sand Beach was especially memorable and we got right up close to the huge turtles! Provided a great lunch and small tour meant really getting to know the people we spent the day with, and made it very special. Knew everyone's name and had a fantastic day.

Waterfalls, volcanoes, ocean views, oh my!

The Big Island tour was fantastic! We saw a lot of different sites and had plenty of time to take pictures. Brian was very knowledgeable about island history and kept the trip from being boring. This is a LONG tour. However, the longest drive without a stop was only about 45 minutes, so again, not boring. I do recommend, that if you are on the Big Island more than a day, take this tour the first day or as soon as possible. I wish I had instead of the last day of my visit. Brian pointed out many places to go see on your own. For example, landmarks, churches, historical sites, where to go snorkeling, and places to eat. Take notes on paper or your phone. One tour cannot go everywhere, but with Brian's recommendation, the rest of your stay on the island will be filled.

The Best Big Island in a day tour!

Fantastic way to see the whole island in one day. If you are short on time it’s great and if you have lots of time on the island it gives you a great overview to plan the rest of your trip. Our tour guide: Kala Holiday was the best. He gave us lots of history of the island and is a great photographer too! I highly recommend this activity.

Great island overview- but could be improved

Learned a lot and saw a lot on the tour - a great overview. But bad weather meant we couldn’t see the caldera. Three of the stops were overlong- at places with little interest and big tourist shops- including the volcano house where the weather meant there was nothing to see! Reducing those stops would have shortened the day a little
