There are few more images iconic to Hawaii than a waterfall spilling through the rain forest, and on this scenic Waipio waterfall tour, you have the chance to view some of the best, most famous waterfalls in Hawaii.

The tour begins when you’re picked up directly from your Kona or Waikoloa hotel, where you drive towards historic Waipio Valley through the pasture lands of Parker Ranch. Upon arrival in Honoka’a, admire the small, old school atmosphere before boarding a 4-wheel drive vehicle, to explore a part of the Hawaiian Islands that’s known as the Valley of Kings.

Navigate the rugged valley terrain towards the base of Hi’ilawe Falls, and stand amidst taro falls with an unforgettable view of the island’s tallest waterfall.

Having craned your neck to take in the falls, journey back up towards the top of the valley to the Waipio Valley Lookout, where you soon enjoy a lunch of teriyaki chicken, grilled fish, seaweed salad, and rice (vegetarian meals available upon request).

Relax on the serpentine drive to Hilo along the Hamakua Coast, before emerging at thundering Akaka Falls and its staggering drop. If weather permits, you get to swim and kayak under a private waterfall to cool down after a short hike. Next move over to Rainbow Falls, where the angle of light can often create a colorful rainbow in the mist. Descent into an ancient lava cave to learn more about the volcanic processes that continue to shape the Big Island.

The drive back to Kona is an adventure in itself, as you travel the infamous Saddle Road between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, climbing to high on the frigid, windswept moonscape. In winter, it’s common for both mountains to be covered with snow, and eventually, drop back down towards Kona for a drop off back at your hotel.

Riding the 4 wheel drive van down the winding steep road was an adventure. Waipio valley was extremely beautiful. Guides were very knowledgeable and entertaining. The van was comfortable and itinerary was perfect.

The beauty of the island is brought out so well in this tour. But the guides made it that much better. We were lucky enough to have one of the top rated guides, Drew, to pass on the history and the beauty. Our guide down into Waipio valley was equally great. He was born and raised in the valley so he knew everything there is to know about the valley. I would highly recommend this trip!

We had a great time on this tour. Alana and Drew were very knowledgeable and personable. We enjoyed this trip immensely. The only thing that was a detriment was the weather which had a light rain off and on all day, this was nothing they could control. But they made the best of it by doing some alternate things such as going to the farmers market where they have the best fruit.. We would highly recommend this excursion for the beauty of this part of Hawaii and the knowlege that was obtained by these two very entertaining tour guides.

The most exciting part of this tour was when Dreu took us to a private waterfalls and we could swim, kayak and water board in the pond below. DREU was an excellent tour guide very informative, knowledgeable and friendly. As the tour was a whole day affair he kept everyone engaged. I would definitely take another tour with Dreu.

It’s like a rainforest valley, waterfalls with breath taking views, this tour is great for anyone. We learned something from our energetic tour guide Dreu. He is humorous and we can feel his passion- he loves the island and his job.

Amazing trip to Hilo side of Big Island! Definitely beautiful on so many levels and quite an adventure! It is a long day so rest up! Snacks/water provided. Bring your poncho or rain jacket as the valley gets wet and rainy! Hiking sandals with straps work best in my opinion. Derek did a great job guiding us! The guy who took us down the mountain in 4X4 van was awesome story teller! Highly recommend if you have the time!

Excellent day! Got to see so many waterfalls! We had an excellent driver and the van was very clean and comfy. Just be prepared for lots of driving. Lunch was good, but we were starving by the time we got back to our hotel.

Longer time at private falls!

Lots of driving, which makes sense since the island is so large, but you’re in the car longer than you’re at waterfalls. A little disappointed that we were only able to get in the water at the private falls for 30 minutes after driving all day. We had fun, and got to see a lot of the island and some really cool waterfalls, and took some pictures. I wish we got to stay at the private falls longer, that was our favorite part of the tour!! Make sure to bring walking shoes, because there is a bit of walking, a good amount of stairs, and uphill portions.

Derekk was fantastic and the tour couldn't have been more fun. Hr was full of history and facts amd kept the tour moving all day.. Douglas drove us into the valley where he was raised. He was the coolest.. everyone knew him and many were his family. It was a great mix of magnificent views and captivating Hawaiian stories passed down from generation to generatio . We are active throughout a good portion of the day, either In a 4x4 going into the valley, swimming under a waterfall or climbing through a lava tube. This is a fun, fun, fun tour!
