Meeting point: outside FRIEDRICHSTRASSE TRAIN STATION, on the square beside the 'Traenenpalast' (Palace of Tears), Reichstagufer 17, 10117 Berlin. Our guide will be wearing a blue lanyard with a yellow name tag! If you still cannot see us, please call us at the office before the tour starts.

10:00 AM
Alexanderplatz , 10178 Berlin, Germany
Begin this walking tour with a meet and greet outside Friedrichstrasse train station with an expert local guide, who will provide a detailed account of Berlin’s fascinating and oftentimes troubled history — specifically its place in the Cold War. After World War II, Berlin turned from its role as the capital city of Nazi Germany into the pivotal city in a struggle to control war-torn Europe. Berlin became the centerpiece of the Cold War, where the two superpowers collided.

Discover this divided city and retrace the trail of the “death strip” and the Berlin Wall. Walk along Bernauer Strasse, the site of many remarkable escape attempts, and the remains of the wall at the Berlin Wall Memorial and Former Stasi (DDR secret police). Walk under the famous Brandenburg Gate, one of Berlin’s most important monuments. It was a symbol of division between Berlin and Germany during the war, but it’s now a national symbol of peace and unity.

Learn about the history of Berlin, from its founding to this divided city of the Cold War, and get a fascinating insight into what it meant to live in the German Democratic Republic, the Eastern Bloc’s most heavily policed state. Find out what it was like to live behind the Berlin Wall.

This tour is an absolute must see. The information and facts that Jamie provided were valuable as I realized that I didn’t understand the Cold War as good as I thought. I have done a lot of these tours and the combination of this tour and Jamie our guide made this the best tour I have been on so far.

Ronan our guide was knowledgable and informative and happy to take questions and to go further into a subject if we showed interest. I was with my 16yo who had just finished his History GCSE and so for him this was an amazing chance to see at first hand what he had been learning. We came away after three hours having learnt so much more about the Cold War. I could have happily carried on for another hour because I was learning so much.

This was a great experience and Maria D. (from Brazil) was outstanding. She was very knowledgeable and was able to answer any questions from the group related to the Cold War and Berlin. We were going to try to do this on our own, but were very happy we didn't as the commentary helped make connections we would have missed. This was even more interesting having taken our young adult children who did not live through this troubling time and being able to recount our experiences.

We enjoyed the learning aspect of the tour. We therefore got a better idea on how Berlin looked like during the Cold War, which is important because it plays a big part in the recent history. Our guide, Maria, was very resourceful and she explained everything very well. We went to two museums and we took a metro. It was nice to have material things to understabd what she was telling us more. She was very open to our questions as well. Great experience, thank you.
