New River Tubing Adventure in Boone
Enjoy a calming float on the river!
A group of 8 of us got together for a friend's 30th birthday. We all reserved "premium" tubes (an upcharge) and two of us reserved cooler tubes (also at a charge). When we arrived, parking was limited and we had to drive about a fifth of a mile away to park--not a deal breaker, but if you're hot and damp, it isn't pleasant. After we rode the van to the river, we were informed that there were no more premium tubes or cooler tubes. No one offered to refund any money, but encouraged us to wait until more tubes arrived or just use other tubes. All of this is manageable. HOWEVER. When you get about halfway to the end of the route, there is a bridge that barely clears the river by more than a foot. If the river is high, I don't even know how people get under it. We were told in the van that there were employees stationed at the bridge to help you get under it, but not to get out of our tubes because the water is pretty deep there. I can vouch that the water is deep there, because a few college kids had hopped out to walk their tubes under the bridge, and they were chest deep in the fairly quickly moving water. The employee who helped us get under the bridge (with a massive confederate tattoo on his arm) told us that he wasn't paid in anything but beer because his uncle owned the business, but he'd still help us get under. Ultimately, he untied our group of 8 from a cluster into a line of tubes, and we managed to get under the bridge by pressing ourselves down into our tubes and pushing against the bottom of the bridge with our hands. Once we got past the bridge, the river quickened a bit and one of the tubes with a cooler on it came unhooked from our group. One of us jumped out of his tube to go get the escaping car keys and other items. Thankfully, the water was only knee to waist deep at this point. We managed to get everyone back together, but the water was quick, and two of our party lost shoes in the chaos. My cloth face mask was lost to the depths. I saw a lone hard seltzer can floating down the river ahead of us. I 100% recommend tubing as a great way to spend an afternoon. I 100% guarantee that I will never be returning to this location or company. I'm giving them 2 stars because the employees (other than unemployed bridge person?) we talked to were polite and seemed overwhelmed by the situation their company had put them in.
I have never been tubing down a river before Labor Day! I had a blast and can’t wait to go again! I rented a tube for all day and went down the river 2 times. There was a very big difference in the two runs. I went in the afternoon, & the 1st run had a lot of people on the water. The sun was of course hot and the water felt fantastic. The 2nd run was kinda near the end of the day. There were people but not a lot. The wind was gently blowing and the smell of the air changed a bit. It smelled of different flowers it I could not smell the first time. There was even a little wildlife that was not seen the first time. The coolness of the evening started creeping in and the water then felt warmer. I went as a solo and felt safe. The staff were very helpful with everything from ticketing, shuttling to drop off area, giving the tube, sending you off, & collecting the tubes at the end. I also observed the staff being kind not only to me but the rest of the people that were waiting to be taken to the drop off point. The staff also looked like they work well together.
