Whale Watching Akureyri
Start your outdoor adventure with an early morning pickup from Akureyri Backpackers, or make your own way to the base camp at Hafgrímsstaðir, located about 1 hour away. You'll receive a drysuit, PFD, helmet, booties, and gloves to keep you warm. After a safety briefing, set off with qualified river guides on an unforgettable, heart-pumping journey down the East Glacial River gorge.

Marvel at Iceland's untamed beauty while paddling the Class IV+ white-water rapids — turbulent waters strong enough to satisfy any adrenaline seeker. It's a powerful ride, but no previous rafting experience is required.

Back on shore, you're served warm riverside refreshments before the return drive to Akureyri Backpackers. From here it's a short walk to the harbor where you'll depart in the late afternoon on a whale-watching tour of Eyja Fjord, home to migratory humpback whales. Board the 200-passenger, specially modified whale-watching vessel, which offers spectacular lookouts from its viewing platforms. With ample indoor and outdoor seating, a bar and a cafeteria, the speedy cruise ensures a comfortable ride in Iceland's deepest fjord.

While sightings cannot be guaranteed, in summertime you are likely to observe humpbacks as well as possible minke whales, blue whales, and white-beaked dolphins.
