Terracotta Warriors Museum (Emperor Qinshihuang’s Mausoleum Site Museum)

Daily 8:30am - 5pm

The Basics

A huge statue of the emperor now guards the entrance to the Terracotta Warriors Museum, where three enormous pits are filled with row upon row of these remarkable effigies—the first pit alone holds some 6,000 examples in excellent condition.

The museum and excavation site is by far the most popular day trip from Xian, and options are plentiful. Choose between a full or half-day tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Site with a small group or your own private English-speaking tour guide. Some day tours also include visits to the Hanyang Mausoleum, Muslim Quarter, Big Wild Goose Pagoda, City Wall, or a Tang Dynasty show and dumpling banquet. If you’re on a tight schedule in China, you can even see the terracotta army on a day trip by air from Shanghai.

Great tour! It was a small group of 4 of us and the tour guide was great. She brought us to the Terracotta Warriors and told us the best spot to take pictures. We were also given free time during the tour. The second half of the day we visited the Banpo village, which was interesting but not as exciting as the Terracotta Warriors. Overall, it was a great tour--highly recommend!

Private Half-Day Tour of Terracotta Warriors Museum From Xi'an
To first see the Tara Cotta Army takes your breath away. Our guide was excellent. She sat us down before each exhibit and explained what we would see once inside so we knew exactly what we were looking at. She was a wealth of information and knew the perfect place for pictures. Viator made this a day in our lives we will never forget.

Private Xi'an Tour: Terracotta Warriors, Hanyangling Museum, Cave Homes
A really excellent tour that covers a lot of history. Michael was a charming and efficient guide with a wealth of knowledge which he clearly loved imparting. The visit to the cave dwelling is quite short but very touching as a glimpse of a way of life that is fast disappearing. We had a really excellent noodle lunch in a local restaurant in a town near the Terracotta Army - it's up to you whether you join the locals in the enjoyment of the bowl of raw garlic on every table, but I found it really worked with the noodles. The speciality of the place was seat belt noodles, the width of a seat-belt and almost as long - you order by how many you want 2 noodles is a decent portion for a westerner Michael claims to eat 4! The Hanyangling Museum is not on the main tourist itineraries but more than merits a visit as it is a really well-designed museum in which you actually walk over the archaeological site on glass floors. Quite fascinating. All in all, an excellent day.

When to Get There

The Terracotta Warriors Museum is one of China’s most-visited attractions; to avoid the worst crowds, plan to visit on a weekday first thing in the morning or later in the afternoon, after the bus tour groups have left. Since the excavation pits are indoors, weather isn’t a factor—but the pits can be freezing cold in winter.

Xian Terracotta Warriors by the Numbers

Since their discovery in 1974, more than 8,000 soldiers, 670 horses, and 130 chariots have been unearthed. Each warrior is unique, with distinct facial features and heights, though the average height is 6 feet (1.85 meters). It took an estimated 40 years for some 700,000 laborers to complete the army.
