The Basics

The stone Big Wild Goose Pagoda is one of Xi’an’s most notable landmarks, and it’s almost always included in city sightseeing tours around the ancient city. It’s usually visited along with other Xi’an attractions, such as the Terracotta Warriors in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Xi’an City Wall, Muslim Quarter, and the Bell Tower.

Within the structure, a spiral staircase leads up to an overlook with a panoramic view of the city. Visitors pressed for time in China who still want to see this and other Xi’an highlights can do so with a day trip by air from either Beijing or Shanghai.

Xi'an Private Day Tour: Terracotta Warriors and Big Wild Goose Pagoda
Friendly, knowledgeable and, engaging guide who kept us informed throughout. The actual tour was good however I'm not a great supporter of factory tours as part of the process. All in all a good day with a good guide.

Xi'an Day Trip of Terracotta Warriors, City Wall, Big Wild Goose Pagoda
We had a lovely time in Xi'an. Our tour guide, Michael, was fantastic! He was knowledgeable, attentive and considerate. He went above and beyond to make sure that our every need or desire was attended to. Mr. Liu, our driver, was also great! We were well taken care of.

Private Tour:Terracotta Warriors,City Wall,Great Mosque&Big Wild Goose Pagoda
Would highly recommend this tour. Our tour guide Owen was great with his communication prior to the tour with e-mails & texts to ensure we are kept right up to date on the arrangements and meeting location. Bang on time a call to our hotel room advising us he was ready in the lobby for our day. The transportation was clean with an excellent confident driver which is a must in the challenging roads of China. On Owens recommendation we agreed the Terracotta Warriors are best left to the afternoon due to the morning crowd, so we headed into Xian to the other sights. Owen gave us a great trip into the history and sights of central Xian, allowing plenty of time to look and ask questions, his knowledge was awesome. Lunch was marvellous, in the Chinese restaurant with plenty to eat and drink, also catering for vegetarians. On to the star attraction of the warriors, again his knowledge along with the sight we had travelled 6500miles to see made it a day we will never forget. Would highly recommend this trip and Owen and his team, outstanding

Amazing Warriors, but a shopping trip?

Xi'an Private Day Tour: Terracotta Warriors and Big Wild Goose Pagoda
My husband and I booked this private tour because viewing the Terracotta Warriors has always been a bucket-list item for my husband. And, yes, the Warriors were amazing! What was not amazing was the "shopping" stop we made at a factory that makes terracotta warriors, souvenirs, furniture, you name it! That was not in the description of the tour we booked, and not only did we not purchase anything (despite the many sales pitches), we were annoyed that our time was wasted there. Yes, their items were quite pretty, but we wanted to get on with the Terracotta Warriors - the real purpose of our tour. The shopping stop is the reason my rating is not a 5-star. The Warriors lived up to their hype, our lunch was plentiful and delicious, and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda was beautiful. We were lucky enough to be there when the monks were chanting, and we loved that. Our guide, Becky, was very nice and very knowledgeable. She is working on her English, however, and sometimes we did have a language barrier.

Xi'an Private Day Tour: Terracotta Warriors and Big Wild Goose Pagoda
Noble was an awesome guide! He went above our expectation in accommodating and providing the historical information as well as modern life in Xi'an. We had a great time at the Terracotta museum, factory, and Big Goose Pagoda during the day. We got to try the famous Xi'an fat rice noodle and finish the day tour with a delicious boba. Noble even recommended us to go for a walk to Muslim Quarter from our hotel, which was a fun experience to try local food and got to take a bunch of pictures of all the lights, towers, and ancient wall. Since we arrived after the Lunar New Year holiday, there's still a lot of street lights decoration and we felt like we're in an ancient Chinese drama walking through the colorful ancient wall and square. I've been telling my family and friends about this trip and recommend them to visit Xi'an via this private tour.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The pagoda is a must-see for first-time visitors and travelers with an interest in Chinese or religious architecture.

  • Visitors must pay an entrance fee to Da Ci’en Temple, as well as a separate fee to climb the pagoda.

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes, especially if you plan to climb the pagoda tower.

How to Get There

Several public buses stop at the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, but the easiest way to get there is to take the Xi’an Metro to either Dayanta or Xiaozhai stations. The latter is about a 10-minute walk from the pagoda.

Da Ci’en Temple

The Big Wild Goose Pagoda sits on the grounds of Da Ci’en Temple. While the grounds of the Buddhist temple are much smaller than their original size, they still exceed 12 acres (5 hectares). Xi’an’s Drum Tower and Bell Tower sit to either side of the entrance, with a series of structures running along its central axis, including the Hall of Mahavira, Sermon Hall, Big Wild Goose Pagoda, and the Hall of Xuanzang Sanzang.
