Governor's Palace Tours
Read MoreShow Less
For many travelers, the highlight of a trip to historic Williamsburg is a tour of the ornate Governor’s Palace, which served as the official residence of the Royal Governors of the Colony of Virginia. Construction on the Governor’s Palace began in 1706, and although updates and remodeling continued for decades, official construction concluded in 1722. Thomas Jefferson was the last governor to live in the palace.
The 30-minute guided tour of the site takes visitors back to the early 18th century. Docents lead the tour dressed in period-era clothing through the palace's three floors, each spanning over 3,300 square feet, an extensive cellar and numerous outbuildings. The main house burned down in 1781 but has since been restored to much of its former grandeur.
An all-access ticket to Historic Williamsburg includes the Governor’s Palace. Tours last approximately 30 minutes and educate visitors on the palace’s history and the lifestyle of the royal governors who lived here. The palace is generally open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and ticket prices vary, depending on the number of Williamsburg attractions you'd like to see.

Very Sad Experience
, Jul 2020
You should be more clear on the fact that it is a self guided tour. My husband has Parkinson’s and we could only see the Governor’s Mansion and a few streets of other places. Most of it was closed. For $110, we were really upset! Do not do this if you are not able to walk a lot.
on our own

When I got the tickets I thought it was for a group tour. I called the 800 # and Customer Service told me we would be shuttling in a group of 9. When we got to the Visitor Center they told me the tickets were for a self/guided tour. I was very disappointed and felt the ad for this “tour” was misleading.
A Great investment
, Feb 2020
I wasn’t sure what to expect - this was a great investment. The info doesn’t break it down very well - Colonial Williamsburg is a “living museum”. The pass is absolutely necessary if you want to enjoy the full experience. Three days is definitely enough for a leisurely exploration. It gets you access to the shuttle bus, and entry into 95% of the homes/shops - without these passes you can’t even get in. At the Palace, the Wyatt House, the Everard House, the Coffee House and the Capital Bldg, you get guided tours. In all the other shops there are trained artisans there working their crafts and giving lectures on everything from brick making to wig making to looming and the apothecary. These volunteers are extremely knowledgeable, and friendly. They encourage audience participation when appropriate, and really make the experience one to remember. My kids loved it. They studied the Revolution the year before we went and this was a great way to bring that history to life for them.
