The Basics

Just down the road from George Washington’s historic Mount Vernon estate, downtown Alexandria is frequently paired with tours of Mount Vernon. These guided tours take you to sites such as the 331-foot (100-meter) George Washington Masonic National Memorial and Gadsby's Tavern Museum—a popular hangout for the nation’s founding fathers that today combines historic dining and exhibits.

History isn’t the only thing Alexandria has to offer. You can get a taste of the hipster food scene on a tour that combines historic haunts and modern sustainable dining. Or, take your camera or a smartphone and join a guided photography tour led by a professional photographer who can help you capture the quaint town's essence.

Beautiful Day but Insensitive Driver

Mount Vernon and Old Town Alexandria Day Trip from Washington DC
The trip was wonderful. I do want to say our first driver was fantastic but the driver that picked us up and took us back to the hotel told some "cow abortion" jokes. The topic of abortion is a political and emotionally sensitive subject and the jokes were completely unnecessary and inappropriate. I believe he said his name was Bobby. My trip was on October 6 at 11. I'm hopeful that he can change his jokes to more appropriate subjects.

Mount Vernon and Old Town Alexandria Day Trip from Washington DC
Easy way to experience Mt. Vernon. Our driver, Joe, was knowledgeable about the area and made the trip fun. I wish we had more time at Mt. Vernon; we were unable to explore all the grounds and the museum due to the short amount of time we were there, approximately 3 hours.

Mount Vernon and Old Town Alexandria Day Trip from Washington DC
Our driver was personable and shared information with us throughout the tour. The only thing that keeps me from giving it 5 stars is that there were two vans, and the guests on the other vehicle said their driver never spoke. We were fortunate we were on the right van!

Top Historic Attractions in Alexandria

The number of historic attractions in the colonial-era town can be overwhelming, so if you want time to explore the town’s shops and restaurants too, you have to prioritize. Start with George Washington Masonic National Memorial where you can enjoy historic exhibits, neoclassical architecture, and views from a 360-degree observation deck. From there, visit the southern manor-style Carlyle House, before heading to Gadsby's Tavern Museum to enjoy a meal in 18th-century style.
