The Basics

The gardens of Versailles are famous for their spectacular musical fountain shows and evening fireworks displays, held throughout the summer months.

Most visitors opt to discover Versailles on a half-day tour from Paris. With wait times lasting up to two hours, it’s worth booking skip-the-line entrance tickets if you plan to visit both the palace and gardens. You can explore the gardens on a self-guided tour, but visiting with a tour guide can be helpful if you have limited time or want to learn more about their history.

Wonderful tour!
Great tour! Without the bikes, you would not have been able to cover half the amount of ground we did. Picking our lunches at the market and then having a picnic was such a unique experience. Our guide GiGi, was fantastic! Not only was he very knowledgeable about the entire Versailles grounds, he was very funny and friendly! Would definitely recommend this tour to others!

Versailles Palace & Giverny's Monet House Guided Visit with Lunch from Paris
Van was modern, clean, comfortable. Guide Francois was knowledgeable, responsive, courteous, fun, we’ll-prepared so all went smoothly.. Giverny is charming beyond words. Lunch restaurant, in a garden area beside an old mill, was exceptional—food was delicious, served artistically, accompanied by wine, served meticulously. We were a small group (7) and soon knew each other! The Versailles tour was probably too brief for others, but I was still enchanted with Giverny, so it was long enough.

Giverny and Versailles Small Group Day Trip from Paris
The gardens at Giverny were gorgeous! Tour of Versailles was interesting and informative. Gilles was a fantastic guide! Friendly, personable, patient, and knowledgeable. He even gave us additional tips on things to do near our hotel. Please be sure to let him know that we found Arenes de Lutece - ate lunch in the park and watched people playing bocce. Strolled around and enjoyed seeing this old Roman ruin right in Paris! Our day with Gilles was outstanding!

Versailles Palace & Gardens Guided Tour from Paris with Optional Fountain Show
I have been to Versailles before a few times but with guide Alex I learned more fact and some gossip and fiction/non fiction which was hugely entertaining. Alex made the tour - his exquisite knowledge of history and the added benefit of the behind the curtains stories had me mesmerized. It gave the place life ! Absolute must - ask for Alex. Versailles Palace Skip the Line Small Group Guided Tour
I had a wonderful tour and the Paris TRIP tour operators were very helpful when I got confused about my ticket. The gardens tour is only included when there is no magic fountain show. In any case I spent hours wandering about the place and could have spent much longer. Our guide Olivier related a number of interesting stories about the palace and about French nobility. I learned a lot. This was definitely a highlight of my trip to France.

Versailles Palace Guided Tour with Gardens & Fountains Show from Paris
Our guide was super knowledgable, and I learned so much more than the standard audio tour! I would say the half day is plenty. The gardens are so big you would need to rent a golf cart there to see it all.

Versailles: Food & Palace Bike Tour
The team that runs this tour is hands down, the best group. The tour guides are very knowledgeable, personable, and truly love the job they do. I experienced an air bnb crisis in the middle of the tour and the team worked with me and my bnb host to resolve the issue, provided me with multiple options, and I was able to return to the tour! Lola, Stu, and Nikki are the best and when I return to Paris, I will look for more of their tours!!

When to Get There

The Versailles Château Gardens are open year-round, but by far the most popular time to visit is in high season (April to October) when Musical Fountains Shows, Musical Gardens, and Fountains Night Shows take place. On show days an admission fee is charged, and it’s best to visit early in the morning or just before closing to avoid the busiest periods. Visiting in low season means smaller crowds, but for conservation purposes the fountains are switched off, the groves are closed, and many of the statues are covered.
